Average 36.4 years old, symptoms are’fever cough’… Corona mutation revealed

In Korea, 2 out of 10 patients infected with the COVID-19 mutant virus were confirmed to have spread in the local community. More than half of the men were in their 30s. More than half of them were symptomatic, mainly complaining of weak respiratory symptoms such as coughing without fever.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported the’Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Patients with Corona 19 Major Mutant Viruses’ in the recently published Weekly Health and Diseases. This is the first time that we have investigated the transmission of mutant infected people in Korea.

According to the Agency for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of mutant patients increased to 162 by the 1st of this month after the first confirmation of a person infected with a mutant virus from the UK during the quarantine stage on December 28 last year. Analyzing these, it was confirmed that 127 people (78.4%) were infected with mutations from abroad, mainly due to foreign inflows.

41.4% (67 people) were confirmed at the self-isolation stage after entering the country, and 35.8% (58 people) were confirmed at the quarantine stage. Among those exempted from quarantine, 2 (2.1%) were confirmed by a diagnostic examination conducted after entering the country. There were also 35 confirmed cases (21.6%) that were transmitted and infected in Korea without a foreign history. 19.8% (32) were infected by contact with a confirmed patient, and the remaining 3 (1.9%) were investigating the path of infection.

The majority of patients with mutations originating in the UK (85.2%, 138 patients) were followed by South Africa (11.1%) and Brazil (3.7%). Seven out of 10 males (65.4%, 106) were more than half. By nationality, Koreans accounted for 64.8% (105) and foreigners accounted for 35.2% (57).

The average age of mutant infected people was 36.4 years old, with 25.9% (42 persons) in their 30s (30-39 years old). This was followed by ▶20s (20.4%) ▶40s (18.5%) ▶50s (11.1%) ▶60s (9.3%) ▶10s (6.8%). In addition, there were 10 (6.2%) aged 0-9. There were 1 (0.6%) in their 70s and 2 (1.2%) over 80 years old.

Among the mutant virus patients, 6 out of 10 patients (61.7%) had symptoms, more than half. When categorizing them by symptom, 37 patients (22.8%) had only mild respiratory symptoms such as cough without fever. 27 (16.7%) complained of mild respiratory symptoms with fever, 18 (11.1%) complained of only fever, other symptoms such as chills and abdominal pain accompanied by fever, or only other symptoms 8 People (4.9%). Two patients (1.2%) also lost the sense of smell and taste.

The symptoms most complained of were mild, but 5 out of the UK mutant infections were in the severe gastrointestinal stage. Patients with severe gastric disorders refer to patients who need intensive treatment such as high flow oxygen therapy, artificial respirator, and extracorporeal oxygen supply (ECMO). This included one fatality, a mutant infection from the UK. As a result, the fatality rate of major mutant virus patients in Korea was 3.09% and the fatality rate was calculated as 0.6%.

Among the five cases of mutant infection, a detailed epidemiological investigation was conducted ▶ related to Gyeongnam and Jeonnam foreign relatives meeting ▶ related to family members in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do ▶ related to relatives meeting in Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do. It was confirmed that it was mainly spread through meetings of relatives. A total of 38 confirmed cases related to the Gyeongnam and Jeonnam foreign relatives’ meetings were confirmed, of which 13 were confirmed as mutations. 7 out of 8 people related to Siheung City, Gyeonggi Province, and 7 out of 31 people related to relatives meeting in Yeoju City, Gyeonggi Province were confirmed as mutations.

The Agency for Disease Control and Prevention said, “The mutant virus is reported to have higher transmission power than the existing virus and the immunity effect from the vaccine is reduced.” The reinforcement must continue,” he stressed.
