At least 17 people have been confirmed to have died in the Pentagon’s air strike in Syria.

On the 26th (local time), Reuters reported that at least 17 people were killed in an air raid by the U.S. military in eastern Syria, citing local and medical sources. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.

Earlier the day before, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that under the direction of President Joe Biden, it had raided a number of infrastructure used by armed groups backed by Iran in eastern Syria. The air raid is said to be in response to attacks on US and allied troops stationed in Iraq and a continuing threat to these personnel.

In fact, in Iraq, attacks against US-related facilities and people such as US embassies and US military bases have not ceased. On the night of the 15th, a rocket gun aimed at a US military base killed a civilian and wounded an American soldier.

The attack came as Joe Biden’s administration attempted to resume diplomacy with Iran, including nuclear negotiations. Some analysts say that the US launched an air raid to gain an edge in the fight ahead of negotiations to return to the nuclear agreement (JCPOA, Comprehensive Joint Action Plan) with Iran.

Meanwhile, Syria has yet to disclose any position on the US air raid, and attention is paid to whether the Syrian side will counterattack in the future, or if it will be done.
