The availability of the AstraZeneca novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) vaccine for senior citizens aged 65 or older will be announced today.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) announced on the 14th that it will announce the’Corona 19 vaccination February-March implementation plan’ at a regular briefing at 2:10 pm on the 15th. It is known that the targets for each vaccine and specific vaccination schedule will be included.

The availability of AstraZeneca for seniors aged 65 and over is expected to be announced today. There is growing controversy over the fact that the vaccination effect has not been verified due to the lack of clinical trial data for the elderly. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety decided on the 10th that vaccination for the elderly was possible, but in the precautions for use,’the use for the elderly over 65 should be carefully decided.’

If the target of vaccination is determined to be under the age of 65, the possibility of a change in the vaccination plan announced by the government earlier this month is raised. This is because the vaccine for the elderly is not available. In the first quarter, the government announced that it would inoculate a total of 830,000 people, including 50,000 medical staff treating COVID-19 patients and 780,000 elderly and workers in nursing hospitals and nursing facilities. AstraZeneca vaccine can be stored at 2 to 8 degrees, so it is easy to inoculate directly to a nursing hospital, so it is highly likely to be inoculated to the elderly. However, if AstraZeneca vaccination is restricted, it is difficult to visit 250 vaccination centers nationwide to get Pfizer vaccination. In this case, an alternative to inoculate workers in nursing hospitals and nursing facilities is suggested.

On the 14th, medical staff smiles for a moment after collecting samples at the temporary screening clinic for novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) in Seoul Station Square.

If it is decided to inoculate the elderly, the’effectiveness controversy’ will likely continue. Some countries, such as Germany and France, recommend vaccination only for those under the age of 65. Belgium recommended under 55 years of age. However, an advisory group from the World Health Organization (WHO) recently announced that adults over 18 years of age should be allowed to use the AstraZeneca vaccine without any age restrictions.

In order to prepare detailed plans for vaccinations in February and March, the Agency for Disease Control and Prevention held an advisory body, the Vaccination Specialist Committee, to discuss once. Based on this, work has been carried out to determine the target for vaccination. Disease Commissioner Jeong Eun-kyung will announce the vaccination plan at the briefing that day.
