(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Yuri Shin = AstraZeneca countered the media reports that its novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) vaccine was insignificant in the elderly, saying, “It is completely wrong.”
According to Reuters and AFP news agency, AstraZeneca issued a statement on the 25th (local time) and dismissed the report saying it was not true.
Earlier, some German media reported that the AstraZeneca vaccine is only 8% effective in the age group over 65, citing sources.
As a result, German authorities are not expected to approve the use of the vaccine for older people, they added.
AstraZeneca refuted this in a statement on the same day.
In a statement, the company claimed, “According to the data we published in Lancet in November, the elderly showed a strong immune response from vaccination,” and “after the second vaccination, the generation of antibodies in the elderly was 100%.”
He added that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) in the UK has approved the use of older people.
The reaction came just before the AstraZeneca vaccine was approved by the EU.
The Corona 19 vaccine jointly developed by AstraZeneca with Oxford University in the UK is currently being reviewed for conditional marketing approval by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and the results are expected on the 29th.
Earlier, AstraZeneca is making noise with EU authorities over delays in supply.
On the 22nd, AstraZeneca announced that its initial supply to Europe would decrease due to production disruption, and the EU raised pressure on the 25th by discussing an export block card.
AstraZeneca is a pharmaceutical company headquartered in the UK and has production facilities in Belgium.
