ASEAN “Myanmar military, Shame state adviser to be released immediately” | Voice of America

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) urged Myanmar’s military to release state advisor Aung San Suu Kyi and restore democracy.

ASEAN foreign ministers criticized the authorities’ armed suppression of the Myanmar people who protested against the military coup during the videoconference today.

Representatives of the Myanmar military forces who caused the coup were also present at the ASEAN meeting.

Singaporean Prime Minister Li Xianlong told the British BBC that something tragic has happened in Myanmar.

He also pointed out that the sanctions against Myanmar will not affect the military and will cause damage to the people, releasing shame torture and finding a solution.

Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Letno Masudi, who has been pursuing diplomatic efforts in the region, explained that Myanmar should open up its economy to ASEAN to relieve the growing tensions.

Minister Marsudi said ASEAN countries would not interfere with their internal affairs, but added that political law should be released and democracy should be restored.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Hishamuddin Hussein called for the immediate release of torture shame and other prisoners, saying that if the situation worsens, it will not contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

ASEAN countries included Myanmar, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Brunei and Vietnam.

In the midst of this, Myanmar authorities fired live ammunition at protesters protesting a military coup in the northwest region, and three people were seriously injured.

So far, it has been confirmed that at least 50 people have been injured and 18 have died in the process of suppressing protesters by Myanmar authorities.
