Bloomberg News reported on the 18th (local time) that Apple is hiring an engineer in charge of 6G wireless communication system research.

According to reporter Mark German, Bloomberg, citing Apple’s recently registered job offer, Apple is looking for engineers to research and design next-generation (6G) wireless communication systems for wireless access networks.

“We will have the opportunity to create the next generation of wireless technologies that will have a major impact on our products in the future,” Apple said about the job. In addition, the job must participate in academic and industry-academic forums related to 6G technology.

Apple introduced 5G connectivity to the iPhone 12 for the first time in 2020. 6G technology is expected to be more than 100 times faster than 5G, but it is not expected to be released until 2030.

At the end of last year, Apple joined the’Next G Alliance’, a corporate alliance founded by the American Telecommunications Industry Association (AITS) to secure leadership in 6G technology. In addition to Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Verizon, Qualcomm, Cisco, Google, Hewrat Packard, Intel, LG, Samsung Electronics, and VMware have participated in this alliance.

IT media McRumers analyzed this recruitment announcement as an extension of Apple’s recent strategy to develop its own, not entrusting major parts and technologies to third parties, saying that it means that Apple wants to participate from the early stages of 6G technology development. In addition, he added that it may be a move for Apple to develop its own 6G modem chip without relying on Qualcomm in the future.

In 2019, Apple finished a legal dispute with Qualcomm and installed Qualcomm 5G modems on the iPhone 12 series. According to court documents released last year, Apple plans to use the Snapdragon X60 5G modem for iPhone this year, and the world’s first 10-Gigabit 5G modem, the Snapdragon X65 5G modem, will be used for the iPhone in 2022.

British investment bank Barclays analysts and several sources predict that Apple will have its own 5G modem by 2023, and “Snapdragon X65 modem could be the last Qualcomm modem used in the iPhone.”
