LG Electronics announced on the 23rd that it will cooperate in the electric vehicle parts business with Magna International, the third-largest global parts maker. According to the Financial Supervisory Service Electronic Disclosure System (DART, DART), LG Electronics is simply dividing related businesses such as motors and inverters among the electric vehicle parts business. The spin-off new company plans to create a joint venture with Magna under the name’LG Magna ePowertrain (tentative name).
Kim Jin-woo, a researcher at Korea Investment & Securities Co., said, “Magna has a good knowledge in the assembly and consignment production of finished cars. We are already consigning automobiles of several European automakers such as BMW, Jaguar, and Vanz.” There is also an observation that it may be possible. Apple and LG Electronics already have a business relationship. Considering the respective relationship between Magna, Apple, and LG Electronics, it is possible to supply LG Magna to Apple cars.” According to foreign media and industry, it is known that Apple is aiming to launch its own self-driving car by 2024.
There are three implications for the increasing number of new players in the automotive industry. First of all, it is a re-lighting of the automobile industry. Researcher Kim said, “The possibility of Apple’s advancement is not only seen as a threat, but it means that the growth potential of the automobile industry is high.” It is difficult for Apple to exclude automobiles.”
Re-lighting of automobile manufacturing technology and core parts is also indispensable. As more and more companies enter the automobile industry, the ransom of manufacturing technology, which has been treated as an obsolete industry, is increasing. This includes core processes such as hot stamping as well as final assembly. Researcher Kim analyzed that “the more new customers are, the more bargaining power of companies that have core parts will increase, and the potential for sales growth will increase.”
