The Gyeongbuk Bio General Industrial Complex in Andong, Gyeongbuk is rapidly emerging as the birthplace of’vaccine development’.

This industrial complex is also attracting attention as President Moon Jae-in visited the Andong Plant (‘L House’) of SK Bioscience, which has entered the Gyeongbuk Bio Industrial Complex as a corona 19 vaccine manufacturing site.

In particular, as L House is known to produce corona19 vaccines such as AstraZeneca in the UK and NovaVax in the US or receive technology transfer, the industrial complex has emerged as a cutting edge in vaccine development in Korea in conjunction with the vaccine industry policy promoted by Gyeongbuk Province and Andong City. have.

The Gyeongbuk Bio Industrial Complex was completed in 2010 and boasts a scale of 941,431㎡. There are about 40 companies, including food and beverage companies and pharmaceutical companies.

Among them, SK Bioscience is the representative company, starting commercial production of a quadrivalent flu vaccine from 2015, and recently signed contracts with AstraZeneca and NovaVax to produce the vaccine.

SK Plasma, which has global competitiveness in the field of blood product manufacturing, is also moving in and is accelerating the production of products.

This industrial complex is at its peak with the completion of the Animal Cell Demonstration Support Center on December 28 last year.

Through the operation of the center, it is possible to provide a virtuous cycle system of the vaccine industry to start-up companies: research → non-clinical → clinical → commercialization.

As KTX’Ieum’ stops at Andong Station, which was relocated at the end of last month, the improved accessibility to the metropolitan area is also expected to be a big driver for the development of the industrial complex.

Andong City has established and is pursuing a plan to establish a secondary bio industrial complex with a size of 495,000m2 in 2023 to attract additional mid-sized and superior companies.

Andong Mayor Kwon Young-se said, “It is possible to provide one-stop corporate support from development to mass production by establishing an animal cell demonstration support center and a vaccine commercialization technology support center.”
