Correspondent Kim Hyun = An American woman in her 60s, who repeatedly secretly steals a plane and embarrassed US aviation security authorities, was again arrested at the airport.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office, which has jurisdiction over Chicago, announced on the 18th (local time) that it had arrested Marylin Hartman, 69, a “rule illegal occupant” at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on the 16th.
Authorities said, “He was reported to have left the designated facility without authorization during probation and tracked down the electronic monitoring device to confirm that he was heading to the airport where the restraining order was issued.”
He then reported that he was arrested near O’Hare Airport Terminal 1 at 1:38 pm and imprisoned in Cook County Prison.
According to the daily Chicago Tribune, Hartman broke the bail rule and did this again just days after responding to a recent local broadcaster’s request for an interview.
The lawyer estimated that “Hartman’s feelings became extremely unstable after the broadcast went out,” and that he may have rekindled his obsession with smuggling. In an interview at the time, Hartman said, “I will not go illegally boarding in the future.”
On the 18th, the court imposed a bail of $100,000 (about 110 million won) for Hartman’s violations, and ruled that parole was not permitted on charges of violating the bail condition.
Hartman is scheduled to go to court again on the 22nd.
The Associated Press reported that this is the 22nd time Hartman has been arrested for attempting to board an aircraft free of charge, smuggling, and violating an airport restraining order.
The first attempt on record was in February 2014 when he passed security checks at San Francisco airport and boarded a flight to Hawaii, where Hartman was caught sitting in the cabin and the seat owner appeared.
Two months later, in August 2014, he succeeded in secretly getting on the plane at San Jose International Airport.
He went to Los Angeles Airport but was sentenced to probation after it was revealed that he boarded for free.
In 2015, he went from Minnesota airport to Jacksonville, Florida, stayed in a hotel near the airport under someone else’s name, and was even charged with fraud and trespassing.
He was imprisoned for six months in a treatment facility, but in January 2018, he went to O’Hare Airport again, without a passport or boarding pass, to Heathrow Airport in London, where he was arrested by British law enforcement.
He was released after receiving probation and mental illness orders and was again captured and imprisoned at O’Hare Airport security checkpoint in October 2019.
However, in March last year, law enforcement officials took probation at a facility operated by a non-profit organization after taking measures to release inmates early to prevent the spread of Corona 19.
Hartman’s motive for action is unclear. He was known to have lived in Chicago about 10 years ago and has since become a wandering homeless person.
