The technology that predicts the structure of some proteins in viruses with artificial intelligence (AI) has been selected as a biotechnology with the greatest impact in the future.

The Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology announced on the 23rd that it has selected 10 promising biotechnologies, including AI-based protein modeling technology.

There are four technology categories: Platform Bio, Red Bio, Green Bio, and White Bio.

AI-based protein modeling technology belongs to Platform Bio. This technology uses a molecular physics approach and deep learning AI to predict a three-dimensional protein structure from an amino acid sequence, one of the biological challenges, and predicts protein action in cells.

Last year, Google’s AI program AlphaFold provided clues to the development of vaccines and treatments by predicting the structure of some proteins in the Corona 19 virus.

This technology is expected to significantly reduce the time and cost of new drug development by not only predicting the protein structure, but also the in vivo mechanism of action of the protein, as well as the relationship with disease and the identification of drug targets.

In addition, ▲Bio-derived chemical diversity security technology ▲Personalized in vitro immune system technology was selected for Platform Bio.

In the field of red bio, ▲ synthetic immunity technology ▲ single cell correction technology ▲ nano vaccine/nano antibody technology were included.

▲ Cell culture livestock technology ▲ plant microbiome engineering technology was selected in the green bio field, and ▲ eco-friendly polymer production microbial technology ▲ big data-based ecological health evaluation technology was selected in the white bio field.

In this research result, five post-pandemic response technologies were included among the top 10 bio future promising technologies, but the researcher plans to derive’promising technologies for post-pandemic response infectious diseases’ by focusing on countering infectious diseases additionally.

Heung-yeol Kim, head of the National Biotechnology Policy Research Center, said, “Covid-19, which drove the world into chaos, is still ongoing, and innovative technologies that can prepare for the post-pandemic beyond the post-corona are expected to become a collection of promising biotechnology future “
