Promote autonomous driving innovation project by investing 1,974 trillion won by 2027

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Boram Yoon = The’Autonomous Driving Technology Development Innovation Project Group’, which will lead the commercialization of Level 4 autonomous vehicles by 2027, was officially launched on the 24th.
Four ministries, including the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the National Police Agency held the launching ceremony of the Autonomous Driving Technology Development Innovation Project Group (hereinafter referred to as the Autonomous Driving Project Group) at the Korea Automobile Center in Seocho-gu, Seoul.
The government has started the autonomous driving technology development innovation project worth KRW 1.97 trillion in 2027, aiming to commercialize the’Convergence Type 4+ Autonomous Driving’ from this year.
Level 4 autonomous driving is a level that does not require driver intervention even in emergencies as the vehicle itself recognizes and judges the situation. Convergence type level 4+ means that not only autonomous driving technology but also infrastructure and social services are all innovating to level 4 or higher.
The autonomous driving business group, launched this time, is a public interest corporation established to promote the project more organically and to increase the commercialization of research results.
It consists of a total of 17 personnel, including the head of the project manager (Choi Jin-woo, former Hyundai Motor Group PM), who has been in charge of developing new autonomous driving technologies for a long time in the private sector.
The project team plans to comprehensively plan and manage the autonomous driving technology development innovation project, which has been promoted by departments, and strive to promote commercialization such as dissemination and spread of business results. It also plays a role of bridging public and private cooperation.
At the inauguration ceremony, Vice Minister of Industry Park Jin-gyu said, “We will support all directions to foster autonomous driving as a key growth engine of our automobile industry.” .
The government plans to increase the competitiveness and reliability of autonomous driving technology by using the vast amount of autonomous driving learning data built in the data dam project.
In addition, by 2024, safety standards and insurance systems for Level 4 autonomous driving will be established, and related legal systems will be reorganized, such as preliminary verification of autonomous vehicles’ driving capability and operation support systems.
