Samsung Display announced on the 14th that it has signed a collective agreement with the union. Samsung Display is the first among Samsung Electronics affiliates, including Samsung Electronics, Display, SDI, Electricity, and SDS, to agree on a collective agreement between labor and management.

The Samsung Display Union was officially launched in February of last year as a member of the Korean Federation of Trade Unions. In May of the same year, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong declared’no-union management abolished’, and negotiations began in earnest to reach a single agreement. It is reported that the labor and management agreed on 109 provisions, including the improvement of welfare benefits and wage and allowance systems, after 7 months of negotiations. It also contained details on guaranteeing union activities, such as granting an exemption (time-off) of 9000 hours of working hours per year to the Samsung Display union, which currently has 1,500 members.

The signing ceremony was held at the Asan Campus 1 in Chungnam this afternoon. The event was attended by Samsung Display Vice President Kim Beom-dong (Human Resources Team Leader), Jang Jae-seong, Chairman of the Korean Trade Union Metals Labor Union, and Kim Jeong-ran and Lee Chang-wan, co-chair of the Samsung Display Union.

Vice-president Kim Beom-dong said, “We have achieved a smooth labor-management agreement based on communication and trust despite difficult internal and external conditions.” Labor union co-chairman Lee Chang-wan said, “The union is not an organization that opposes the company, but an organization that communicates together.”

Since its founder, the late Chairman Lee Byung-cheol, Seondae, Samsung has been sticking to “no union management”. However, in May of last year, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong held a press conference to apologize to the public in accordance with the recommendations of the Samsung Compliance Committee. I will definitely guarantee it.”

In the final statement on the farewell judgment for the destruction of the Gukjeong Nonongdan at the end of last year, he pledged that “no union management will no longer come out.” “I will surely keep the promise I said. Samsung will be different now.”

Samsung Display’s labor and management will begin consultations on wages and benefits for 2021 as early as the end of this month. Solidarity negotiations are underway between labor and management of four electronic affiliates, including Samsung Electronics.
