A total of 30 LNG vessels are repaired by the Gas Corporation and entrusted to Korea.

Even if it is more expensive than overseas, the advantages increase after Corona 19

Shipbuilding industry sales and employment will increase, and foreign currency outflows will likely decrease.

The Korea Gas Corporation announced on the 5th that it has decided to entrust the regular repairs of all LNG vessels it has to a domestic shipyard.

Gas Corporation conducts regular inspections and repairs twice every 5 years for stable LNG transportation, and has been consigned to overseas shipbuilders such as Singapore and Malaysia, where labor costs are low.

However, as the outbreak of the new coronavirus infection made it difficult for LNG ships to consign overseas repairs, gas corporations have left the ship repairs to a domestic shipbuilder since last year. KOGAS has a total of 30 LNG carriers, and last year, it left a domestic shipyard to repair 7 ships and provided about 8.4 billion won of work.

Korea Gas Corporation’s nationality line 18, K Jasmine, under repair at Samgang S&C, a domestic shipbuilder.

Korea Gas Corporation plans to entrust the repair of 12 ships to a domestic shipyard this year as the repair of LNG vessels in Korea contributes to the development of the shipbuilding industry, and the construction is also advantageous in terms of physical distance.

In particular, KOGAS decided to pass on advanced technologies to domestic shipbuilders by cooperating with Gyeongsangnam-do and shipyards (Samgang S&C, Seongdong Shipbuilding) through its own professional manpower and equipment for areas that lack facilities and experience.

Gas Corporation President Chae Hee-bong said, “We will entrust all LNG vessels in possession to the domestic industry to minimize foreign currency outflows, and contribute to the creation of profits and jobs for companies, helping to vitalize the domestic economy, which was stagnant by Corona 19.” Emphasized.
