Input: 2021-04-08 18:25:01

A new start always raises anticipation. Because of the change in experience. A new start on the PC is no different. The reason is that new products with distinct changes such as performance and operating environment are constantly appearing. Intel’s 11th-generation core processor is also one of these. It wasn’t simply a new product that succeeded the previous generation, but because it announced a new start with various changes.

11th-generation Intel Core processor on the market, codenamed Rocket Lake. Compared to Comet Lake, the codename of the previous-generation Intel Core processor, it looks similar, but if you look inside it shows a different aspect. Of course, it is not a complete change, but a gradual change, but compared to the existing changes, there are hidden efforts to change.

So, what changes are applied to the 11th generation Intel Core processor compared to the previous one? I checked it myself through the top lineup, the Core i9-11900F. Interestingly, the 11th Gen Intel Core i9 processor differs from its previous counterpart.

■ 11th generation Core i9 processor changed by’architecture’ change

As mentioned earlier, the 11th generation Intel Core processors have been subjected to architectural changes. The newly developed Cove architecture was used from the Skylake architecture, which was the framework of the previous generation. Basically, starting with the improvement of IPC (Instructions Per Clock), deep learning boost (Intel DL Boost) technology, the application of new graphics devices, and the increase in the speed of response to PCI-Express 4.0 and memory controllers, etc. Do.

The architecture is known to reflect the so-called’backporting’ process of re-adjusting the existing 10nm-based to 14nm. In order to minimize the loss, Intel has made several optimizations to the Cove architecture. In particular, efforts were made to maintain the maximum performance. It is good to see that expanding the transmission band is one of those methods.

The application of the deep learning boost technology is a way to cope with the changed environment. This technology is rooted in Vector Neural Network Instruction (VNNI) based on AVX-512 instructions. Recently, various tasks such as acceleration, analysis, and inference are performed using artificial intelligence, and the application of VNNI can greatly shorten the processing time.

The internal communication speed remains the same, but the bandwidth of the PCI-Express protocol for communicating with external devices has been doubled as 4.0 technology was reflected. By applying up to 20 lanes, graphics cards and NVMe SSDs can be used. The response speed of the internal memory controller has also been increased to DDR4-3200MHz. Previously, it remained in response to DDR4-2666~2933MHz, but we expect the responsiveness to improve significantly due to the speed improvement.

Although limited, platform compatibility continues from previous products. This is because it uses the same LGA 1200 socket. Some motherboards can use 11th Gen Intel Core processors, but there is a possibility that there will be limitations on PCI-Express or other high-bandwidth utilization. If you want to maximize the performance of the processor, we recommend using a Z590 or Intel 500 series chipset motherboard.

■ What is the performance of Intel Core i9-11900F?

11th generation Intel Core processor with Cypress Cove architecture. What is the performance of the top lineup, the Core i9-11900F? I decided to check the processor information and run some software and games to check it. To this end, the main board used a Z590-based product, DDR4-3200MHz memory, and GeForce RTX 2080 Super graphics card.

Motherboard-ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XIII HERO
Memory-G.SKILL TRIDENT Z DDR4-3200(PC4-25600) 16GB (8GB x 2)
Storage-Micronics WARP GX1 512GB
Graphics Card-NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super
Power Supply-Micronics Castlelon M 700W
Operating System-Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (20H2 update applied)
Driver-GeForce Game Ready 461.92

The specifications of the Core i9-11900F processor checked through CPU-Z are as follows. The number of physical cores is 8, and a total of 16 threads are provided through hyper-threading technology. This is a slightly smaller scale compared to the 10 cores and 20 threads of the existing equivalent processor. TDP is 65W, which is not a K-type processor, so it is expected to show relatively low power consumption. The set multiple is up to 52, showing that it works up to 5.2GHz. For reference, the basic operating speed of this processor is 2.5GHz.

In addition, the processor is an F-type and does not include built-in graphics. The general type is equipped with Intel UHD Graphics 750 to which Intel’s newly developed graphics processing unit Xe-LP is applied. If you are a consumer who needs built-in graphics, there is a way to purchase a generic processor (Core i9-11900).

▶ CPU-Z benchmark test

First, we conducted a comparison test of the processors in CPU-Z. As for the comparison group, we proceeded with the Intel Core i9-10850K, which is counted as the same lineup of the previous generation (10 cores, 20 threads). As a result of this, a single-threaded score of 679.5 and a multi-threaded score of 6339.7 were recorded. It looks like it leads in single thread and lags behind by a small number in multi-threaded. However, considering the difference between the four threads, the width is relatively small.

▶ Corona 1.3 rendering benchmark

This time, we ran the Corona 1.3 benchmark to check the processing power of the processor itself. You can check the 3D rendering performance. As a result of running it, it took about 1 minute and 37 seconds. The data throughput was found to be about 5.5 MRays/s. Compared to the previous generation equivalent core processor (approximately 1:52), it performs better. It can be expected that the new instruction set applied along with the architectural change influenced the overall process.

▶ Far Cry 5 Gaming Performance Test

In order to check the gaming performance in earnest, we launched Far Cry 5, a first-person shooter (FPS) game. In order to check the maximum performance, the resolution is set to Full HD (1920 x 1080) and the graphics options are all set to maximum. Settings such as vertical synchronization and frame lock were not applied. As a result of testing, it shows an average of 133 frames of motion. The minimum was 94 frames and the maximum was 173. The basic speed is as low as 2.5GHz, but it is a figure that maximizes the performance of the graphics card by increasing the speed when running the game.

▶ Chernobylite gaming performance test

Similarly, we checked the performance of Chernobylite, a first-person shooter game. Even in this game, the full HD resolution and graphics settings have the highest Ultra specifications applied. As a result of running the game, it averaged 99.36 frames. This is a number that allows you to enjoy the game comfortably. Then, it recorded the lowest 52.46 frames and the maximum 188.4 frames. The 1% frame figure, which measures game performance, was 52.2.

▶ Red Dead Redemption 2 Gaming Performance Test

Finally, we tested with Red Dead Redemption 2, an open world game. It is also a game that boasts quite high specifications due to its excellent expressive power and high degree of freedom. In order to bring out the maximum performance, the resolution is set to the highest specification for both full HD and graphics.

As a result of the test, it shows a stable image recording more than 60 frames per second with an average of 85.9 frames. However, if you want to enjoy the game in an environment of QHD or 4K resolution or higher, it is desirable to compromise the graphics option or choose a graphics card with higher performance. In addition, the minimum frame was 50.7 and the maximum frame was 114.7, respectively. There is no regret for a gaming processor.

■ High-performance all-in-one processor ready for various environments

The 11th generation Intel Core processor, of which the Core i9-11900F, is the most basic high-performance lineup and shows stable processing power. Although two cores and four threads are reduced compared to the previous-generation Intel Core i9 processor, an extended instruction set or an architecture with improved efficiency helps overcome those limitations. For example, it showed high performance in various environments such as rendering, artificial intelligence acceleration, and gaming, which are affected by the performance of the processor.

Productivity is a part for consumers to judge. But the basis is what the manufacturer provides. In this regard, Intel is making steady efforts. It is continuing support to provide an optimal experience in an invisible place, such as software and hardware compatibility, and collaboration with various peripheral device manufacturers. However, this must also be followed by the basic unit of the processor. The value of the 11th Gen Intel Core processor depends on how to prove it to the consumer.
