A man in Wales, UK, who accidentally discarded a hard drive containing bitcoin worth $275 million (about 300 billion won), offered to dig a landfill for 25% or 70 million dollars (77 billion won).

According to CNN on the 16th, a man named James Howels, an IT company employee, abandoned 7500 bitcoins he had between June and August 2013. Howells has been mining Bitcoin since 2009, when it had little value.

He had forgotten about this, looked up when the value of Bitcoin increased, and realized that he accidentally discarded the hard drive with garbage. As bitcoin prices have soared even higher in recent years, he went to Newport City Council in Wales to ask for permission to sell a landfill that appears to have hard drives buried.

Instead, he said he would provide 25% of the bitcoin value so that local residents could share it. 25% is an amount that can give 70 million dollars (77 billion won), or 260,000 won per person for 316,000 Newport City citizens.

I knew the hard was gone when the total was about 9 million dollars. Currently, one bitcoin exceeds $35,000, and the total amount of bitcoins he has lost is $273 million.

However, the authorities declined the proposal, citing environmental issues. “The cost of digging a landfill, storing and reprocessing waste can be millions of pounds,” the authorities said. “You can’t sell a landfill without a guarantee that you can find it or that it will still work if you find it.”
