A Korean international student attending the prestigious Manchester University in England was convicted in a local court for illegally photographing 20 women, and the information was released to the media.
The British Daily Mail and others reported on the 1st (local time) that Mr. Kim, 21, living in southwest London, admitted to 26 charges in Manchester Criminal Court. The court ordered Mr. Kim to complete a sexual crime recurrence prevention program, order 36 months of social service, and 220 hours of unpaid work. It also ordered the identification of sex offenders for the next five years.
Kim’s crime was caught in November 2019 when a female student found a camera in the shared shower room at the university. As a result of the investigation, at least 24 women’s photos were found on the camera installed by Kim. In addition to the shower room, there was also a video of a woman’s skirt and a woman’s face climbing up the stairs.
In January of last year, the police arrested Mr. Kim. Among the victims, there was a student who knew Kim. “I can’t believe that Mr. Kim invaded my privacy in this way,” he said. “Now I have to make sure there are no hidden cameras wherever I go.” Other victims also confessed, “I’m really unbelievable and angry,” and “I had a problem establishing relationships with other people after going through this incident.”
The judge pointed out that “Kim had a false belief that there were no victims in this case,” and “but the victims consistently spoke of the hurt, anger, and suffering caused by your actions.” However, he was not sentenced to jail for the fact that Kim was young and that his behavior could be managed by the community.
In response, local media released his real name and age, saying, “A student who illegally filmed 20 people avoided imprisonment.” In addition, several photos containing faces and whole bodies were reported without mosaics.
