The British BBC reported that crocodiles were raised on farms to obtain hides in Western Cape, South Africa on March 3 (local time).

Crocodiles, whose exact number is unknown, escaped from a commercial breeding farm in Bonibale to a nearby river.

As a result, the police and local officials went on a crocodile hunt and captured 27 of them as of the 4th, the next day. However, it is not yet clear how many crocodiles are not being caught.

The escaped crocodiles were man-made crocodiles that live widely in Africa and are 1.2 to 1.5 meters long, officials said. Freshwater crocodiles grow to an average of 5m, and mature males weigh more than 0.5 tons. They are mainly bred to obtain crocodile skin products.

“Crocodiles are bred, so they aren’t used to hunting for prey, so they are only at an intermediate level of danger, but they are basically beasts that are faithful to their instincts,” said Petro Van Lin, a spokesman for the Western Cape Environment Department.

In particular, he stressed that “the residents should not go around the river until all the escaped crocodiles are caught.”
