National research and development (R&D) projects to secure core 6G communication technologies will be promoted in earnest. It means that it will not lose the leadership in mobile communication network technology amid global competition focused on early preemption of 6G technology beyond 5G.
Investment of 200 billion won for five years from this year will begin in key initiatives discovered through preliminary feasibility studies, expert opinion collection, and public hearings.
The Ministry of Science and Technology Information and Communication announced on the 7th that it will promote the 6G core technology development project. Last year, after the mobile communication R&D promotion strategy to lead the 6G era was confirmed, it is starting to commercialize it in earnest.
Mobile communication infrastructure is the core of the’data highway’, an axis of the digital new deal, and is an essential foundation technology for social and industrial development as well as for the convenience of the people. In order to secure global market leadership in the mobile communication market, advanced technology development and standard preoccupation are essential.
Recently, major countries in the world, such as the United States, China, and Europe, have entered the competition to preempt the next generation of 5G, 6G. In addition, it is an important time to continue the momentum of economic rebound by further enhancing Korea’s outstanding ICT infrastructure competitiveness from the transition to a digital economy triggered by the coronavirus situation.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to focus on technology development in challenging and leading areas that are difficult to actively invest in the private sector, such as low-orbit satellite communication technology development, through the 6G core technology development project.
Focusing on the 9 strategic technologies in the five key areas, this year, we plan to provide 16.4 billion won for 11 sub-tasks, including 10.8 billion won in the super-performance super-stage field, 2.3 billion won in the hyperspace field, and 3.3 billion won in the ultra-precision super-intelligence field.
Specifically, Tbps-class radio toxin and optical communication infrastructure technology, THz band radio frequency technology, intelligent radio access technology, and mobile core technology are major R&D business areas.
In particular, based on the standard patent strategy map in cooperation with the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the IP-R&D method is applied to support R&D funding and standard patent securing strategies to companies and institutions in packages.
In addition, a university-centered 6G research center will be selected to strengthen basic 6G research and foster professional talent.
From March this year, the ‘6G R&D Strategic Committee’ is scheduled to be formed, led by the Ministry of Science and ICT, with public and private participation.
