It is predicted that the global foundry market, which has grown rapidly this year, will grow 6% next year.

Samsung Electronics’ share of the foundry market next year will increase slightly from this year, but the gap with Taiwan’s TSMC, the world’s number one company, is expected to remain.

According to Trend Force, a Taiwanese market research institute on the 30th, sales of global foundry companies this year are estimated to be 84.6 billion dollars (about 92 trillion won), up 23.7% from the previous year. This is the highest growth rate in the last 10 years. It was analyzed that the growth of the foundry was affected by the increase in telecommuting, distance classes, and the spread of fifth-generation (5G) smartphones following the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).

Trend Force predicted that next year’s foundry market will increase by 6% from this year to $89.7 billion (about 97 trillion won).

Trend Force predicted that “the demand for network products and’home economy’ according to Corona 19 will continue for a while, and as the global economy recovers, the information technology (IT) product market will also become active, leading to an increase in semiconductor demand.”

In this year’s foundry market share by company, Taiwan’s TSMC occupied more than half with 54%, and Samsung Electronics took second place with 17%. US Global Foundry and Taiwan UMC each recorded 7%, followed by Chinese SMIC with 5%.

Next year, Samsung Electronics’ market share is expected to increase by 1 percentage point to 18%, and Chinese SMIC, which is subject to US sanctions, is expected to decrease by 1 percentage point to record 4%. It is analyzed that TSMC, global foundry, and UMC will have the same market share as this year.

Trend Force said, “As SMIC in China is subject to sanctions by the US Department of Commerce, major SMIC customers such as Qualcomm and Broadcom are changing consignment production orders.” .

Trend Force also said, “TSMC is receiving orders for 5-7nm products from AMD and MediaTek, and Samsung from Qualcomm and Nvidia. The current facility utilization rate is high. From the second half of next year, we will aggressively expand the 5nm volume.”
