As part of the’Digital New Deal’, the Moon Jae-in government announced that it would open the 5G frequency band, which had been monopolized by three mobile communication companies, to private companies. The possibility of entering the business is emerging.
According to the recent policy measures decided by the Ministry of Science and ICT, private companies will be able to install a customized 5G network that can only be used in specific areas such as buildings and factories. Until now, the’intermediate bridge role’ of mobile operators was needed, but now the government directly allocates a frequency in the 28 ㎓ band. 5G It is now possible to install and operate base stations.
On the 27th, an official from the Ministry of Science and Technology said, “Korea has been falling behind in investment and the B2B (enterprise service) market as three mobile telecommunication companies (SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus) monopolized 5G so far.” As in Japan, if the main body of the 5G specialized network is expanded to smart factory companies, the competition system can be activated and the business can develop.”
As a result of the government demand survey, it was found that more than 20 software (software)-based companies such as △Naver △Samsung Electronics △Samsung SDS △Sejong Telecom △Hyundai Motors △Hyundai Heavy Industries and others expressed their intention to participate in the 5G specialized network. Some say that they will focus on smart factory, smart hospital, and smart port business using 5G specialized networks.
A software industry official said on the day, “It is at the level of a simple demand survey, but it is correct that the companies mentioned want to participate.” Naver is expected to use a 5G specialized network to operate 100’brainless robots’ in the second office building in Pangyo, which will be completed at the end of this year.
It is a position that the three mobile telecommunications companies, which have escaped from the existing monopoly system and encountered huge competitors such as Samsung and Naver, are rather welcome.
The 28GHz (gigahertz) frequency allowed for private companies is fast enough to be nicknamed’real 5G’, but it requires a dense base station, which requires operating costs exceeding trillions of won. As business profitability has not yet been verified, the three mobile carriers are still in the early stages of their business. It is argued that if large corporations with capital and technology participate to lay the groundwork and grow the ecosystem pie, it will also help the telecommunications industry.
An official from the telecommunications industry said, “The allotted 28GHz band is an early stage in which an ecosystem has not yet been established from the point of view of a mobile operator.” Other officials also admitted, “There will be no conflict between the large companies that have announced their participation and the three mobile carriers,” and admitted that “the industry is rather expecting to improve business profitability.”
