[아시아경제 김흥순 기자] Due to the new coronavirus infectious disease (Corona 19) pandemic (a global pandemic), the Tokyo Summer Olympics was postponed for one year and is about to be held in July this year, but four out of five Japanese citizens were still negative in the competition.

According to a Japanese public opinion poll released by Japan’s Kyodo News Agency on the 10th, 35.3% of respondents who participated in the telephone survey chose to cancel the Tokyo Olympics and 44.8% chose to re-act. Public opinion that this year’s competition should not be held recorded 80.1%. This is an increase of more than 17%p from 63% of the cancellation/replay of NHK polls at the end of last year.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee decided to postpone the Tokyo Olympics, which was held in July last year, for about four months from the start of the competition, considering the safety issues of the athletes and cheering squads due to the spread of Corona 19. According to the schedule again, the competition is scheduled from July 23 to August 8 this year. However, recently, there have been around 6,000 to 7,000 new confirmed cases of Corona 19 in Japan, including Tokyo, and negative public opinion is spreading. Recently, news came out that a new type of mutant, different from the mutant virus prevalent in Britain and South Africa, was discovered in Japan.

The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee said that if the one-year postponed Olympics do not take place in July this year, there will be no repercussions and will be canceled. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced that he would hold the Tokyo Olympics in a safe and secure manner at the New Year’s address. Because of this, even the Cabinet approval rating is shaking. According to Kyodo News, the approval rating of the Suga cabinet was 41.3%, down 9%p from last month. 42.8% of respondents said they did not support it.

UK Sky Sports predicted that the spread of Corona 19 is making it difficult to host the Olympics, and that the event may be decided until April.
