The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 14th that the number of air passengers last year was 39.4 million, a 68.1% decrease from the previous year (123.37 million).
This is the lowest performance since 2000 (41.97 million), and the number of air passengers recorded below 40 million was in 1998 (33.61 million) and 1999 (3,789) immediately after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) crisis. 10,000 people) after about 20 years.

◇ 88.2% drop in Japanese routes… 84.2% reduction in international passengers
In particular, as Corona 19 showed a pandemic (a global pandemic of an infectious disease) last year, the number of international passengers decreased by 84.2% from the previous year to 14.24 million.
By region, the number of passengers on Japanese routes decreased by 88.2% from the previous year, the largest drop.
This is interpreted by the influence of Japan’s export control measures and the ban on entry without visas following Corona 19. Last year, passengers on Japanese routes accounted for 15.6% of all international passengers.
The number of flights on China routes has dropped sharply since February of last year, and passengers last year decreased by 87.8% from the previous year. However, passengers on Chinese routes accounted for the largest share of international passengers last year, accounting for 15.8%.
In addition, the number of passengers on all routes, including Asia (-83.4%), Americas (-72.3%), and Europe (-82.2%), excluding Japan and China decreased significantly.
International passengers by airport decreased in all airports including Incheon (-83.1%), Jeju (-89.4%), Gimpo (-87.3%), and Gimhae (-88.0%).
By airline, national large airlines (FSC) and low-cost airlines (LCC) declined 82.3% and 86.7% from the previous year, respectively.


◇ 23.7% decrease in domestic passengers… Yeosu Airport alone increased by 2.3%
In the aftermath of the spread of Corona 19, the number of domestic passengers last year was 22.16 million, down 23.7% from the previous year.
On a monthly basis, the number of Corona 19 spread to 1.1 million in March last year, and then gradually recovered. In November, it recorded 2.94 million, a 2.5% increase from the same month last year.
Last year, Jeju routes and inland routes decreased by 27.2% and 2.8%, respectively, from the previous year.
By airport, most airports such as Jeju Airport (-27.1%), Gimpo Airport (-19.8%), and Gimhae Airport (-17.2%) saw fewer domestic passengers than the previous year. However, Yeosu Airport was the only airport to show an increase in passenger traffic (2.3%) thanks to the increase in passengers on the Gimpo route.
By airline, FSC’s domestic passenger traffic decreased 40.4% compared to the previous year, and LCC decreased 11.5%.

◇ 23% reduction in air freight… International cargo excluding baggage increases
Due to Corona 19, the number of passengers suspended and fewer luggage last year recorded 3.25 million tons of air cargo, a 23.9% decrease from the previous year.
However, cargo excluding luggage was 2.91 million tons, a slight decrease (0.6%) from the previous year.
International air freight declined 23.5% from the previous year, but international freight excluding baggage increased by 0.4% from the previous year.
International cargo, excluding baggage, was particularly marked by an increase in the Americas (12.8%) and China (4.6%).
Domestic cargo decreased by 29.7% from the previous year to 180,000 tons, both on inland (-53.3%) and Jeju (-26.8%) routes.
