The Unification Pavilion was erected by the Korean government in November 2015 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of German unification on Potsdam Square, a symbol of German unification, where the Berlin Wall was installed.

It is a hexagonal pavilion made of wood by a one-to-one live-action of the Sangryangjeong of Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul, and has been loved by the citizens of Berlin for its small but elegant. The Unification Pavilion was moved to the backyard of the Korean Embassy when the installation deadline received from the Berlin city authorities expired.

About 30 people had to work together to move the 38 ton unified pavilion along the boulevard in the middle of downtown Berlin.

The Unification Pavilion Transfer Operation started with moving the Unification Pavilion to a trailer at Potsdam Square the day before.

After supporting the underside of the Unification Pavilion with a specially manufactured 8.2t H beam, it was lifted with a 200t crane and loaded onto the trailer.

To prevent the crane from falling over, a safety device was installed with 80 tons of hardware.

Subsequently, the relocation work began in earnest from 7 am on this day.

With three police cars controlling the vehicle back and forth, the trailer carrying the Unification Pavilion began to move slowly.

The trailer, which entered Potsdam Boulevard by turning right on Potsdam Boulevard in four cars one way across Potsdam Square, took only one hour to pass the Berlin Philharmonic to the National Gallery.

Then it took another long to turn around the corner to enter the road next to the Landbear Canal that runs alongside the Spree River.

The Unification Pavilion, who traveled along the Landbear Canal to the Bauhaus Archive, later entered the boulevard heading to Tiergarten, the Central Park of Berlin, and finally completed the 3km long journey and reached Stuler Street, where the Korean Embassy in Germany is located .

It took 5 hours for the Unification Pavilion arriving at the embassy to be re-supported with H beams and lifted with a 200 ton crane and installed in the backyard over the fence.

The police in charge of road control said, “It’s the first time in the middle of Berlin to have such a large-scale transfer operation.”

In the process of carrying the 6.2m tall Unification Pavilion onto the trailer, it was necessary to prune the street trees to prevent damage. During the transfer process, a truck came out with only one pruning.

In Germany, the constitution contains regulations related to the protection of natural objects such as trees, so each tree has a number, and it is said that it is necessary to obtain permission in advance to determine how much to pruning on each tree.

During the transfer, the height of the unified pavilion reached the height of the traffic light, so it was necessary to dismantle and re-install the traffic light in the middle.

Han Hye-ji, the project manager of the Korean Cultural Center in Germany, said, “I stayed up all night with my eyes looking back on the process one by one for a few days in case of an abnormality in the unified pavilion during the transfer process.” .

Andre Weinholt, who supervised the relocation process, said, “After a long preparation process, including consultations with the relevant authorities for four months, we started the transfer at 7 am today.” I have arrived.”
