A public opinion poll found that President Moon Jae-in’s approval rating for state administration was 47%. The positive evaluation also surpassed the negative evaluation for the first time since last December. The results of the national index survey on the 4th week of February on the 25th were conducted by four public opinion survey companies of Embrain Public, Casestat Research, Korea Research, and Korea Research (Detailed results are from the Central Election Commission (www.nec.go.kr) Refer to the Public Opinion Survey Review Committee (www.nesdc.go.kr).
According to the survey, the rate of positive and negative evaluation of President Moon’s state administration was 47% and 44%, respectively, up or down by 5 percentage points compared to last week. The positive and negative advantages have been reversed. All age groups, excluding those in their 60s, increased their positive ratings.
In other opinion polls, the positive evaluation of President Moon is maintained in the 40% range. The Park Geun-hye regime, which recorded 4% of President Moon’s fourth-year term of office (from November 29 to December 1, 2016, the result of a survey on the performance of President Park’s job at Gallup Korea) is extremely unusual compared to previous regimes. It cannot be a shame. According to Gallup Korea’s evaluation of past presidential duties, as of the fourth quarter of the fourth year, Park Geun-hye 12%, former President Lee Myung-bak 32%, former President Roh Moo-hyun 12%, and former President Kim Dae-jung 31%.
Lame Duck?
In May last year, at the beginning of his fourth year in office, President Moon’s approval rating soared to around 70%. It was an achievement of the Corona 19 quarantine. Considering that after the second coronavirus pandemic, along with real estate policies, it has fallen to the lowest 30%, it can be said to be a recovery. Of course, approval ratings are not everything. However, it seems necessary to think of the 41% vote that President Moon received during the 19th presidential election.
In May, the term is five years. It seems clear that the supporters who have given votes to President Moon and the current government have not withdrawn their support. Even considering the approval ratings that soared just nine months ago, it can be said that there is plenty of room for the approval rating to rebound according to the government policy.
How about the corruption at the level of the regime or the corruption of relatives that have grounded successive governments? Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol, who said that President Moon was “the prosecutor general of the Moon Jae-in government,” has said that he will thoroughly investigate the living powers.
There is no case yet in which the prosecution of “speaking by investigation” has made such an achievement. While the former prosecutor’s former lawmaker Kwak Sang-do and the conservative media are eagerly questioning the privacy of the president’s children, they have only invited the president’s children to refute or take legal action, rather than an irregularity that would anger the public. In the case of former Minister of Environment Kim Eun-kyung’s case, a legal controversy arose over how far the scope of ex officio abuse of public officials recognized by the first trial court would be legally recognized.
Nevertheless, President Moon’s lame duck is being visualized as if the power of the people and the conservative and economic journals have kissed. On the 25th, articles and editorials related to lame duck were poured out at once. Compared to the previous government, the approval rating for the fourth year of office seems to be out of focus. The momentum to create a lame duck without
Making a lame duck?
“What is curious is that the President asked for’speed control’, but former Minister Chu (Miae) emphasized the prompt promotion, and Gyeongnam Governor Kim Gyeong-soo also blocked the president’s words (…). Is this government’s specialty,’Show’ or not? I don’t know if it is a false proof of the lame duck at the end of the term.”
-In a commentary on the 24th, spokesman Kim Ye-ryeong
Following the so-called’Shin Hyun-soo passing’ controversy,’prosecution reform speed control theory’ rose on the cutting board. The power of the people, who used to be impeached, has now self-visited the lame duck. In particular, Governor Kim Gyeong-soo directly refuted the interview saying “It’s not a lame duck”, saying that some media distorted it as “refuted to the president.” On the 25th, conservative and economic journals put Lame Duck on the headlines. In the old expression, it was’fantasy costumes’, and in these days it was’tikitaka chemi’.
From the reform of the prosecution to the special law of Gadeokdo, and the 4th disaster subsidy, the subject was also diverse. <중앙일보>The first page on this day <당청 국회 설전까지 커지는 레임덕 논란>Decorated with Iranian knights, <중대범죄수사청 밀어붙이기, 레임덕 자초하는 꼴>Iranian editorials followed.
In addition, in an article on the day, “As the Moon Jae-in administration approaches the end of its term, disagreements between the party and governments are in earnest on each of the recent policy issues.” “The New Airport Special Act” was promoted, along with Democratic Party President Lee Nak-yeon and Deputy Prime Minister Hong Nam-ki, conflicted 4th disaster subsidies.
The newspaper added, “In particular, with the’Wolseong nuclear power plant economic evaluation manipulation’ incident, there are also signs of’lame duck’, such as expressing confusion over the possibility that public officials will be punished for legal issues in the process of policy promotion.”
Let’s ask straightforwardly. Where are all the media that pinpointed the evils of the imperial presidential system? It is not uncommon for democratic governments to encounter debates or disagreements over current issues. Whether at the beginning of the term or at the end of the term, a healthy debate guarantees a progressive policy, and the public opinion is bound to trust the resulting policy. Without such a process, the Korean people have not yet forgotten the memory of the candlelight that impeached the incumbent president in opposition to the state-run Nongdan crisis, in which the unprecedented reality dominates the state administration.
Even if we look into specific issues, it is far from a lame duck. It would be reasonable to see that the high-level prosecution personnel and disagreements over season 2 of the prosecution reform came from a backlash from the prosecutors or as part of a process that would likely arise from policy coordination between the party, the government, and the government. It seems necessary to note that there is also the view that the unprecedented wave of death and media play of the former prosecution leader Min Jeong-suk and the media play are viewed as’irrational numbers of the prosecutor’s secretary’, and that connecting all of them with a lame duck is unreasonable.
In addition, the concerns expressed by the three ministries regarding the New Airport Special Act in Gadeok Island are proof that the current regime is healthy, and it is safe to say that it is a beneficial check over SOC projects that cost tens of trillions of dollars. In the previous authoritarian government, there was an unimaginable check between ministries.
Only regime change?
If I forget, it seems that the impeachment card that I had been uploading has gone over water, so I wonder if I want to make even an early lame duck visible. The political language of the conservative opposition party is not without some inevitable aspect. However, it should be noted that there may be a headwind in terms of approval ratings or standing while trying to visualize the missing lame duck.
Influential conservative and economic journals who eagerly fan lame ducks have long been dreaming of becoming political players or even becoming players. The more they fan the Lame Duck based on sparse grounds rather than healthy criticism, the more they confess to the current government’s approval rating and anxiety about public sentiment that do not decline even at the end of the regime.
Let’s just look at the Corona 19 situation. The people’s safety or national interests seem to be in the midst of vaccinations and other forces that have used all matters as a tool for political disputes under the guise of national unrest. For those who are passionate about fanning lame ducks, only a change of power is a top priority. Those who are eager to make a lame duck that are missing are now a pity.
