The government will invest 240 billion won in research and development expenses to foster system semiconductors this year. It plans to secure technological competitiveness in power semiconductors, sensors, and artificial intelligence semiconductors, which are expected to grow rapidly in the future.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 1st, the Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Science and Technology, Information and Communication, and the Ministry of SMEs and Ventures held the ‘3rd Innovative Growth BIG3 Promotion Meeting’ at the Government Seoul Building on the same day, and’system semiconductor technology innovation support plan to foster the domestic system semiconductor industry. Announced’.

The government plans to support 240 billion won worth of research and development (R&D) in fields such as power semiconductors, next-generation sensors, and artificial intelligence semiconductors through this plan. By department, the Ministry of Industry and Energy is expected to spend 110 billion won, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 15 billion won.

System semiconductor-related R&D aims to secure technological competitiveness for key promising items, and is largely promoted by three pillars: fabless growth support, preoccupation in promising markets, and new market challenges.

First of all, in the case of fabless growth support, we plan to establish a new’Challenge R&D’ to foster global K-fabless with sales of over 100 billion won. This targets fablesses with high growth potential and plans to support the development of competitive strategic products through free public offerings (4 companies selected this year).

In order to create an ecosystem for the domestic system semiconductor industry, the company will continue to discover the’joint R&D task (development of next-generation intelligent semiconductor technology, worth KRW 1 trillion)’ linked by demand companies and fabless. In addition, for the start-up and growth of small and medium-sized fabless companies in Korea, it is planning to promote various R&D support (over 14.3 billion won) such as ▲ start-up support ▲ innovative technology development ▲ commercialization technology development ▲ investment technology development.

To preoccupy a promising market, the company plans to strengthen R&D for power semiconductors (SiC, GaN) and sensors, which are key elements of the Digital New Deal and Green New Deal.

In the case of power semiconductors, we support R&D for silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN)-based semiconductors with high growth potential based on high durability and power efficiency compared to conventional silicon (Si) (new material-based next-generation power semiconductor commercialization R&D , It is planned to be implemented in 2022-2025).

In the case of sensors, in order to respond in a timely manner to the increase in data demand from major industries, the company promotes’K-sensor technology development project for market leadership (support for future-leading next-generation sensor R&D, sensor manufacturing innovation platform, establishment of a test bed, etc.)’. From 2022 to 2028, it plans to invest 532 billion won.

Regarding the new market challenge, we plan to focus on supporting the artificial intelligence semiconductor field with high growth potential as the core foundation of the artificial intelligence and data ecosystem.
