Ministry of Industry holds a strategic meeting to prepare a mid- to long-term roadmap
Established a large-scale R&D business focused on core technologies in the multi-emission industry
[지앤이타임즈 송승온 기자] The Ministry of Industry, which is in charge of industry and energy, the largest sector of carbon emission, decided to establish a’mid- and long-term R&D strategy’ to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050, and held a strategic meeting with related organizations on the 4th.
Carbon neutrality is emerging as a global order that can no longer be countered, but it is a challenging goal that is difficult to achieve as Korea has a carbon-centered energy-intensive industrial structure. The US Biden administration returns to the Paris Convention on the first day of inauguration, and the EU is preparing to introduce a carbon border tax in 2023.
In the end,’breakthrough innovation technology’ that can dramatically reduce carbon in the industrial and energy sectors; The Ministry of Industry stressed that development is the key to achieving carbon neutrality.
In particular, the industrial field has been focusing on technology development focusing on efficiency improvement for carbon reduction, but now it is revealed that it is necessary to develop a fundamental new process completely different from the past.
The energy sector is also in an urgent need to remarkably improve the efficiency of solar and wind power generation, develop hydrogen cycle technology, and develop next-generation power grid technology in order to firmly convert to renewable energy and hydrogen.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Industry announced that it will establish a mid- to long-term R&D roadmap by 2050 in order to systematically promote the development of carbon reduction technologies.
First of all, since consensus with the industry to which the actual technology will be applied is of paramount importance, the policy is to induce active participation of the industry in the process of establishing the strategy and communicate continuously.
In addition, it includes energy supply and energy demand (manufacturing, transportation, buildings, etc.) to proceed with work, improve consistency between fields, and check all possible technologies.
Carbon reduction R&D is aimed at 30 years from now, and it plans to take into account the characteristics that must be boldly challenged in a situation where the possibility of success is uncertain, mid- to long-term technology development, and institutional improvement to promote challenging private R&D.
In order to establish this R&D strategy, the Ministry of Industry organized 16 working groups for each major industry in energy supply and energy demand. I am going to do it.
In addition, the government, the private sector, and industry-academia-university roles for securing technology will be proposed, and overseas technology introduction will be considered if necessary.
The Ministry of Industry is planning to complete the strategy establishment by the third quarter by starting the working group on the occasion of this meeting, and it is planning to conduct consultations with related ministries and public hearings for the industry during the work process.
This work is expected to be reflected in connection with the ‘2050 Industrial Great Transformation Vision and Strategy’,’Energy Innovation Strategy’, and the Ministry’s’Carbon Neutral Technology Roadmap’, which are a comprehensive plan for carbon neutrality in the industry and energy sectors scheduled to be established by the end of this year.
The Ministry of Industry is planning to apply for a preliminary feasibility study within this year to establish a large-scale R&D project, centered on the core technologies of the multi-emission industry that will be derived from this strategy.
Vice Minister Park Jin-gyu of the Ministry of Industry said, “Carbon neutrality is a challenging road for the public and private sectors to achieve with all their strengths, and today’s meeting is an important place to put the first buttons in these tasks. Please promote it while communicating closely.”
