The government will invest more than 200 billion won by 2022 to develop core semiconductor technology for future cars.

On the 11th, the government held the ‘6th Innovative Growth BIG3 Promotion Meeting’ at the Government Complex in Seoul on the 11th and discussed the’Short-term supply and demand response of vehicle semiconductors and strategies to strengthen industrial capabilities’.

A government official said, “The intensifying supply shortage of’vehicle semiconductors’, which depends mostly on overseas imports, has a significant impact on the production of finished cars.” Along with resolving supply and demand anxiety, the mid- to long-term supply chain improvement and market preemption are urgent.

Accordingly, the government announced that it will strengthen the short-term response of public-private partnerships to ensure that there is no disruption in the production of finished cars as the supply shortage of vehicle semiconductors around the world seems to continue until at least the third quarter.

To this end, it added that it will provide support for overseas procurement by companies, such as provision of quarantine in and out of the country, ▲ emergency support for customs administration such as simplification of customs procedures, and support for emergency discovery and performance certification of semiconductors for vehicles that can be supplied in a short-term alternative.

In addition, the government decided to actively promote the development of core technologies and strengthen production capabilities, as in the case of the small manager, so that it can preoccupy the automotive semiconductor market in the mid- to long-term.

First of all, it announced that it will invest more than 200 billion won by next year to develop core semiconductor technologies for future vehicles such as automotive APs, and actively review preferential support such as industrial structure enhancement programs when companies promote the expansion of foundries related to automotive semiconductor production.

In addition, cooperation channels between demand companies such as finished cars and supplier companies such as fabless and foundry will be established on a regular basis, and an online matching platform for demand-linked technology development will also be quickly established within March.
