The cold wave from the Arctic reached its peak on the 8th, but the strong cold is not expected to go away on the weekend.
On the 8th, the lowest temperature in Seoul was -18.6 degrees Celsius, the strongest cold wave in 20 years. It was 18.6 degrees below zero on January 15, 2001, which was the second lowest temperature. On this day, a cold wave warning went into effect in most regions of the country.
The minimum temperature on the morning of the 9th is expected to be -24 to -6 degrees below zero. The central region will rise by 2-3 degrees from the previous day, but the southern region is similar to the previous day, so the cold below -10 degrees will continue. The northern part of the metropolitan area, Yeongseo, Gangwon, and inland Chungcheong would be very cold, below -20 degrees Celsius. Other central regions, Jeonbuk, northern Jeonnam, and inland Yeongnam are predicted to be below -15 degrees Celsius.
The maximum temperature during the day is expected to be 8 to 1 degrees below zero. It will rise slightly from the previous day, but the temperature is expected to be even lower due to the strong wind and 5 to 10 degrees below the average temperature.
As the cold air from the north goes south to the west sea, it will occasionally snow on the west coast of Chungnam and Jeonbuk, the west coast of Honam, and Jeju due to the influence of the cloud belt created by the sea train. In particular, there are places where 5~15cm of snow accumulates in Jeju.
From the 10th, the minimum temperature in the morning will rise 1 to 4 degrees from the previous day, and the’extreme cold’ will be somewhat reduced. In the northern part of the metropolitan area and Yeongseo, Gangwon, inland of Chungcheong and inland of Gyeongbuk, it is expected to be below -15 degrees Celsius, and in other regions, the distribution will be around -10 degrees. In some regions, there is a possibility that the’warning’ will be changed to’warning’ or canceled. In Chungnam and Honam, there may be places where it once snowed.
This cold will continue to below -10 degrees Celsius in the morning in the central region until the 12th. On the 13th and 14th, it will be a little higher than normal (morning temperature minus 9~0 degrees, daytime temperature 1~8 degrees), but the cold will continue for the time being.
The Meteorological Administration said, “As the strong cold continues in dry weather, please pay special attention to the prevention of outdoor fires such as forest fires and residential fires caused by the use of indoor heaters.”
