The government is promoting the development of recycling technology and applied products for’used batteries’ this year.

The plan is to increase the value of use by applying waste electric vehicle batteries to street lights and energy storage systems (ESS). When commercialization is difficult, valuable metals such as nickel, cobalt, and manganese are recovered and used as resources.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 18th that it will support a total of 13 billion won in national expenditure for four years from this year to develop and demonstrate the performance and safety evaluation technology of used batteries, mobile application product development, and megawatt hour (MWh) ESS technology development and demonstration.

First, within 1.4 billion won will be invested in the development of reusable/remanufactured battery bag performance and safety test and evaluation technology. Support targets include performance and safety evaluation technology using a battery management system (BMS), development of BMS exclusively for used batteries, design and evaluation of control algorithms, and standardization projects to secure BMS safety and reliability.

It will support less than 500 million won for technology development for mobile application products using remanufactured batteries such as carts. Including three cases of battery pack technology development for mobile application products, pack development and production using battery modules after use, and BMS optimization technology development business taking into account the application product operating environment.

It will invest less than 1 billion won to support the development and demonstration of MWh-class ESS technology linked to new and renewable energy using reusable and remanufactured batteries. Support targets include system design and production for ESS construction such as used battery BMS and BCU, SOC operation design and system development projects considering life and performance.

An official from the Ministry of Industry said, “Through this project, we will establish evaluation and utilization standards for used batteries, and support the development of various and safe product lines using used batteries.” “We will continue to support efficient recycling of used batteries and securing related companies’ competitiveness. I will.”
