Ahead of Congressional certification of the results of the US presidential election, Republican lawmakers declared that they would not accept the electoral vote results as a group. It is not enough to overturn the results, but as the number of Republicans participating in President Trump’s campaign against the presidential election has increased, there are voices of concern that even the parliamentary certification process is being used as a tool for political conflict.
According to the New York Times (NYT) on the 2nd (local time), 11 Republican lawmakers including Republican Senator Ted Cruz announced a statement that they would oppose the results of the electoral vote, which Biden-elect won at the Senate-Household joint meeting on the 6th. . They emphasized that the electoral corps in some of the problem areas were not legal and demanded an emergency audit for 10 days.
Earlier, Republican Mo Brooks in the House of Representatives and Josh Howley in the Senate have announced that they will file an objection, but this is the first time that several Republican lawmakers have launched a fire in support of President Trump, who has refused to admit losing the presidential election.
However, experts say that even if an objection is raised, there is no possibility that the victory will be reversed. This is because the Democratic Party won a majority seat in the House of Representatives, so the agenda is unlikely to pass through the House of Representatives, and the Republican Party, which occupies the majority in the Senate, is also expected to have an irrational number and will not reverse the election results.
In particular, Senate Representative Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Republican Party, even stated the position that “the Republican Party should not raise objections in the process of certifying the results of the electoral group vote.”
NYT analyzed that “the Republican objection won’t change the election results, but it won’t be able to avoid a partisan fight.”
Meanwhile, before the final vote of the US Senate in Georgia, Republican Congressman David Purdue of Georgia entered quarantine due to contact with a confirmed patient of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).
In Georgia, a final vote is held on the 5th with two seats for the senators, but the majority of the Senate may vary depending on the outcome. If all two seats are taken by the Democratic Party, the Senate seats with a total of 100 seats are divided into 50-50, and the Democratic Party becomes the majority party as the Vice President can exercise a casting boat as the Senate Chairman. If the Republican Party wins even one seat, it retains the Senate majority.
