Italy, where more than 100,000 people died from the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), held the first national memorial event.

According to the Associated Press on the 18th (local time), the Italian government held a memorial event in Bergamo, northern Lombardy, in the presence of Prime Minister Mario Draghi and President Sergio Matarella.

Prime Minister Draghi attended the opening ceremony of the’Remembrance Forest’ that was created to commemorate the victims by giving flowers to Bergamo Cemetery. Prime Minister Draghi said at the event, “This forest commemorates many victims and symbolizes the suffering of the whole people.”

The memorial event was held while schools and restaurants in many regions in Italy, including Bergamo, were closed due to concerns about the corona19 infection. In particular, Bergamo is known as the region that suffered the biggest sacrifices in Italy due to the corona crisis. Local media reported that the number of Corona 19 deaths in Bergamo was so high that military convoys had to be mobilized to move the body.

The Italian government designated March 18, when a military convoy vehicle first transported the body from Bergamo, as a national memorial day for the victims of Corona 19. On this day, early warnings were put on buildings of public institutions throughout Italy, and silence was made.

The Associated Press reported that Italy recorded more than 103,000 COVID-19 deaths, the second highest in Europe after the UK.
