[아시아경제 장세희 기자]Last month, the number of unemployed people recorded 1.57 million, the highest since statistics were compiled in 1999. Last month, the number of employed fell by nearly 1 million, showing the largest decline since the financial crisis. The government said that the base effect of the increase in employment in January of last year (568,000 people) was reflected, but it is interpreted that it has failed to avoid the employment shock caused by the prolonged corona19.

According to the’January Employment Trend’ released by the National Statistical Office on the 10th, the number of unemployed increased by 417,000 to 1.57 million. This is the first time since June 1999, when the unemployment statistics were reorganized, the number of unemployed people exceeded 1.5 million.

Last month, the number of employed was 25818,000, down 982,000 from the same month last year. This is the largest decline since December 1998 (-1283,000 people) during the financial crisis.

The number of employed decreased in all age groups. They were in their 20s (-255,000 people), in their 30s (-273,000 people), in their 40s (-210,000 people), in their 50s (-17 million), and over 60 (-15,000 people).

Among the inactive population, the number of job seekers who gave up job search for various reasons was 775,000 last month, an increase of 233,000 from the same month last year.

Job-seeking resignation refers to the inactive population who has been looking for a job for the past 1 year and hopes to find a job, but for various reasons, has not looked for work in the last 4 weeks.

Meanwhile, the number of people who just took a break without a job search plan also increased by 379,000 to 2715,000 last month. This is the highest record since January 2003 when statistics were prepared.

In-ho Lee, a professor of economics at Seoul National University, said, “It seems that even the provision of jobs for the elderly that the government supported financially has declined due to the impact of Corona 19,” If they reap jobs, the decline in the number of employed will be even greater.”

“Even if some industries such as exports improve, employment will inevitably become more difficult if the recovery of services such as wholesale and retail slows down.”
