[폭염건강②]Suddenly dizziness after sweating… Beware of the occurrence of’orthostatic hypotension’

Low blood pressure is more dangerous in the summer. Due to the hot weather, the amount of water in the body decreases and blood pressure suddenly drops, causing symptoms such as dizziness, dizziness, and general weakness.

General hypotension refers to cases where systolic blood pressure is less than 90mmHg and diastolic blood pressure is less than 60mmHg, and various symptoms such as headache, dizziness, general weakness, decreased concentration, nausea, shortness of breath, fatigue, depression, and fainting appear.

Among them, hypotension that occurs in summer is mostly’orthostatic hypotension’ that occurs as a temporary phenomenon. Patients with orthostatic hypotension suddenly become dark in front of their eyes and feel dizzy when they wake up while lying down, and there are twice as many patients in summer than in winter.

When the amount of water in the blood decreases, the body constricts blood vessels to maintain blood pressure, and the heart undergoes a change in which the heart beats faster to increase the blood flow rate. If this process doesn’t work properly, you’ll feel dizzy due to low blood pressure, lose your mind, and fall down.

Therefore, it is recommended that patients with low blood pressure continue to replenish the moisture lost due to sweating. Drinking about 1 mug of water repeatedly every 2-3 hours will help maintain hydration in the body and maintain blood flow rate.

In particular, the summer exercise should focus on how to relax lightly without being overwhelmed. When hypotensive patients exercise excessively to manage their body, there is a risk of hypoglycemic shock, exhaustion, and shock.

If you are a patient with low blood pressure, it is recommended to refrain from going out in hot weather and increase the amount of exercise step by step, starting with light indoor exercises such as bare-handed gymnastics, Pilates, and yoga that do not feel dizzy.

The habit of eating three meals and three nutrients evenly helps prevent shock caused by low blood pressure. Orthostatic hypotension is often caused by insufficient blood flow or sugar in the brain. Steady intake of carbohydrates and proteins maintains sugar levels such as glucose in the blood and supplies nutrients to the brain.

Jin-man Cho, professor of cardiology at Gangdong Kyunghee University Hospital, said, “In a hot summer, excessive exercise can harm your health. You should drink plenty of water and eat regularly,” he said.
