As the quarantine authorities announced the start of vaccination for the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) as early as mid-February after the Lunar New Year holidays, there are many questions about the vaccine. The JoongAng Ilbo has compiled a collection of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the Corona 19 vaccine.

What vaccines have your country secured?
The government has secured four types of vaccines made by AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Janssen and Modena. The purchase method is divided into two types: joint purchase through COVAX Facility and individual purchase through global pharmaceutical companies. COVAX Facility is an international project for the joint purchase and distribution of vaccines and is jointly operated by the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Vaccine Immunity Association (GAVI), and the Infectious Disease Innovation Association (CEPI). Participating countries pay money and sign a vaccine purchase contract with pharmaceutical companies first, and then supply is guaranteed when development is completed. In this way, the government secured 10 million people, and through negotiations with individual pharmaceutical companies, it secured 20 million AstraZeneca, 10 million Pfizer, 6 million Janssen, 20 million, and a total of 56 million.

When do vaccinations start?
According to the government’s announcement, in mid-February, the Pfizer vaccine purchased through Cobax Facility will start vaccinating medical staff to treat COVID-19 patients with 58,000 people (117,000 doses/2 doses). AstraZeneca vaccine is also scheduled to be given from the 26th. The quantity is 750,000 people who come first out of 10 million people who signed an individual purchase contract with AstraZeneca.

According to the government plan, in the first quarter, 1.3 million people including workers at COVID-19 treatment institutions, workers at high-risk medical institutions, epidemiological investigators, nursing hospitals and nursing facility residents will be vaccinated. In the 2nd quarter, 3 million people including welfare facility users and workers, senior citizens 65 years old or older, medical institutions and pharmacies workers, and 3 million people with chronic illnesses in the 3rd and 4th quarters, adults aged 50 to 64, and social infrastructure workers such as soldiers, police, and firefighting It is planned to inoculate 33.5 million people in the order of children and youth education and childcare facilities workers, and adults aged 18 to 49 years old.

How to inoculate each vaccine?
As for the number of vaccinations, Janssen is the only one who needs to be hit once. The remaining three vaccines (AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Modena) should be administered twice. Pfizer recommends 21 days and AstraZeneca and Moderna 28 days between the first and second doses.

What should I do if I miss the second shot of the vaccine?
If the recommended period for the second dose has been exceeded, it is better to receive the vaccine as soon as possible. However, if the second vaccination is delayed, there is no need to do the first vaccination again. The first and second doses must be of the same type of vaccine. In the case of simultaneous vaccination of different vaccines, immunity and side effects cannot be guaranteed.

Can I know when and where I will fit?
The target of vaccination is’all citizens’. The timing of individual vaccinations and the function of simulation calculations are scheduled to open within March. Specific vaccination timing can be checked on the vaccination information provision website (http://ncv.kdca.go.kr) to determine whether or not to receive the first vaccination and the expected vaccination time. When it is confirmed as the target for vaccination, you can receive information by phone or text, and make advance reservations for vaccination through a separate pre-reservation website and call center 1339. In the case of mobility difficulties, a’visiting vaccination service’ will be provided to the nursing facility where you are admitted.

Do you develop antibodies immediately after getting the vaccine?
It takes about 2 weeks for protective antibodies to form after vaccination. The antibody formation rate is highest 7 to 14 days after the second dose of the Corona 19 vaccine. In order to maximize the effectiveness of the vaccine, it is necessary to complete the second vaccination according to the recommended period for each vaccine and follow the quarantine rules such as wearing a mask, washing hands, and keeping a distance even after vaccination. Because vaccination does not create 100% immunity. According to each pharmaceutical company’s presentation, the immunity effect of each vaccine is about 66% for Janssen, about 70% for AstraZeneca, and about 90% for Pfizer and Moderna.

How much does the vaccination cost? Can I choose the type?
The cost of vaccination is free. However, individuals cannot choose the type of vaccine they will receive. The government plans to select the target and type of vaccination by period, taking into account the amount of supply, characteristics, safety and efficacy, and cases of side effects in the situation where vaccines are supplied sequentially.

Should a person diagnosed with Corona 19 or healed be inoculated?
Vaccinations are also targets for patients who have been cured of Corona 19 in the past or are currently infected and quarantined. However, in the case of administration of therapeutic agents such as blood supply after Corona 19 infection, vaccination is recommended after at least 90 days to avoid interfering effects such as vaccination immune response and treatment.
