“I couldn’t even think of it in my dreams.”

The 74-year-old actor Yoon Yeo-jung, who is going through the last period of an actor’s life, rewrote the history of Korean cinema. In the Oscar nomination list announced by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS),’Minari’ is a total of six categories including Best Works, Best Actor Award (Steven Yeon), Director Award, Screenwriter Award (Isak Lee Sang), and Music Award (Emil Moses Lee). He showed off his potential to be nominated for. Steven Yeun, who played Jacob, who appeared as Sunja’s son-in-law, was nominated for the first Asian-American Best Actor Award.

Yoon Yeo-jeong was nominated for the first Korean actor in the history of the Best Supporting Actress for the film’MINARI,’ directed by Korean-American 2nd generation Jung Isak (Lee Isaac Jeong, 43) at the 93rd Academy Awards. Yoon Yeo-jeong debuted as a publicly hired talent for the 3rd TBC (Oriental Broadcasting) in 1966, and this year has 55 years of acting career.

‘Minari’ strongly shows the color of the grandmother’Soonja’, which is a typical and somewhat unique character in Korea. In addition, as they collide with second-generation Korean-American grandchildren who have never been exposed to Korean culture, the interaction between the characters breathes fire and brings great fun to the audience.

‘Minari’ contains a special journey of a Korean family who left for an unfamiliar United States in search of hope. The director’s philosophy of using mise-en-scène is also noteworthy, not in large cities like New York or Los Angeles where Korean immigrants want to live.

Young father, Jacob (Steven Yeon), is busy trying to pioneer life in the countryside, but he often argues with his wife because of disagreements. The director did not romanticize family histories, like the lives of ordinary immigrants, but dramatically portrayed families such as fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, and grandmothers struggling for the American Dream.

Here, the grandmother Sunja (Yoon Yeo-jeong) naturally and plainly evokes the nostalgia for the Korean grandmother who is crude and straightforward, but deep inside. Minari is not just about an immigrant family. Although dreams and thoughts are different from each other, they communicate and convey their sincerity through the language of love.

Minari tried to escape from sentimentalism, and her grandmother Sunja took the center of her family and gave her an opportunity to rethink the meaning of her family. Yoon Yeo-jung said, “I wanted to challenge” about the opportunity to participate in the movie Minari. In the movie, Sunja gave a painting to her 7-year-old grandson and built a new character full of humanity by showing a somewhat erratic appearance and clunky.

Grandmother Sunja plantes buttercups in the unfamiliar land of America. The water parsley, which is brought and planted with the heart to feed the family, depicts a family of Korean immigrants who are about to take root in unfamiliar American land.

The reason why this film is attracting attention in the Oscars is its purity and simplicity without adding any seasonings to make a wonderful film on purpose. In today’s difficult and complex social environment, water parsley provides the power to purify the mind to those struggling.

It doesn’t matter whether Americans claim this movie as an American movie or a pure Korean movie. Regardless of language and nationality, it is a film that recalls the pieces of memories that many have experienced a long time ago and overcomes the limits and completes an emotion that everyone can relate to.

Yun Yeo-jung’s unstoppable move is a model for many filmmakers. Like an unstoppable train, Yun Yeo-jung will deliver a great comfort to the audience only with his presence, and will provide a light and unstoppable acting.
