As it was predicted that driving an electric car in winter would reduce electricity consumption (electric car fuel economy) by 24%, concerns of consumers who would like to purchase an electric car increased.
However, recently launched electric vehicles are equipped with a’heat pump’ system that improves battery efficiency during winter driving, so there is a view that electric vehicles should be viewed from a wider perspective.
The analysis result that electric vehicle electricity costs decrease by 24% in winter came from the recently distributed’Long-distance Driving Safety Measures Study for New Year Holidays’ of Hyundai Marine Transportation and Climate Environment Research Institute.
According to Hyundai Marine, the Hyundai Sonata internal combustion engine and Ioniq electric electric vehicle drove 77km from Seoul to Yeoju. The analysis result was published.
The Hyundai Marine Transportation and Climate Environment Research Institute analyzed that the main cause of high battery consumption when driving long distances in winter with electric vehicles was the decrease in battery performance due to a decrease in temperature. This is because when driving on the highway, the brakes are not used a lot, and thus the regeneration energy of the battery is hardly generated.
Model Y long range in a typhoon-class wind…
On the 28th of last month and the 5th of this month, GDNET Korea tested Tesla Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance Model twice. During the test drive on the 28th of last month, a typhoon-class strong wind struck the country, keeping the weather below zero, and on the 5th of this month it was relatively warm.
On the day of the test drive on the 28th of last month, it drove 320km without charge from the Tesla supercharger in Hanam of Starfield, Gyeonggi-do through Gangneung, Gangwon-do to the supercharger in Wonju, Gangwon-do. The Seoul Yangyang Expressway and the Yeongdong Expressway were used, and it is a section in which uphill and downhill relatively often appear compared to other areas. In addition, the outside temperature was maintained at an average of -6 degrees Celsius due to the strong typhoon-class wind. It was the worst condition for driving an electric vehicle.
After driving 320km, when I looked at the electric power on the center fascia display, it was marked as 177Wh/km. This means that it can drive about 5.65km per 1KWh. This is the result of repeating the process of turning on and off the heater.

The electricity consumption was slightly higher than the government-approved highway electricity consumption (5.2km/kWh). The combined fuel consumption of the Tesla Model Y Long Range is 5.4km/kWh. Even if it traveled over 300km long distance, it did not cause a big damage to the fuel economy.
The driving force behind such a fuel economy was the heat pump and road speed driving. Electricity can be changed due to heater control depending on the temperature inside the vehicle and the condition of the passengers, but anyone can get the same fuel consumption if driving without excessive force. I could feel the characteristics of the heat pump system to maximize the efficiency of the battery even in the English weather.
When I ran the Model Y Performance earlier this month, the weather was warm enough to average 10 degrees. From Seoul to Gongju and Paju, it was able to drive 400km without charge. The result of electricity consumption at this time was 6.5km/kWh. The approved combined fuel consumption of the Model Y Performance is 4.8km/kWh, and the highway power consumption is 4.7km/kWh.

The recently launched electric vehicle comparative analysis test should be active
The vehicle used in the electric vehicle test conducted by Hyundai Marine & Co. is Ioniq Electric. Currently, Hyundai has discontinued all Ioniq Electric models. This is because Hyundai is planning to release a new electric vehicle based on the Ioniq brand in the future.
In addition, various electric vehicles have already appeared in Korea. Peugeot official importers Hanbul Motors and Renault also launched electric vehicles with reasonable price last year. As the range of electric vehicles is widening, some point out that more rational electric vehicle winter driving tests should be made.

If your car does not have a heat pump, it can be disadvantageous when driving in winter. It seems that consumer confusion can be reduced when companies and governments more easily prepare guidelines for driving in winter for consumers.
The government displays the status of subsidies for electric vehicles currently on sale and the distances that can be driven at room temperature and low temperature in the’Purchase and Support-Low-Emission Vehicle Purchase Subsidy Support’ column on the homepage of the’EV Low-Emission Vehicle Integrated Nuri House’. In the case of low-temperature mileage, it is a mark of the mileage that can be reached when it is below -6.7 degrees Celsius.
