Hyundai Motor Company’s hydrogen electric vehicle Nexo owners are experiencing stack stress recently. It is a common opinion that it is impossible to drive properly due to the rumbling and slowing of speed while driving.

Hyundai Motor Company is making a move to solve the stack problem with its own maintenance personnel. However, as the stack component price is close to 40 million won, which is the price of a vehicle, voices are growing among owners that a lifetime warranty is required. Currently, Nexo’s stack-related parts warranty is 10 years or 160,000 km.

The stack is like a hydrogen electric vehicle engine. It plays the role of driving the Nexo vehicle by combining oxygen floating in the air with hydrogen inside the vehicle to generate electricity. It is a key device in the construction of a hydrogen electric vehicle.

Nexo owner J, who lives in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, suffered a sudden stack-related defect while driving on the highway on the 30th of last month. During high-speed driving, noise was generated and warning lights were turned on, and the speed dropped sharply. Mr. J posted such a case on Naver’s Nexo Cafe and expressed his feeling that he was “dead and alive”.

Mr. J’s vehicle cluster says, “Check the fuel cell system! Immediately stop in a safe place” was lit. J later visited Hyundai Motor’s Seobusan Center and was diagnosed with a defect in the stack, coolant, and water pump. The total price of the parts in question exceeded 3 million won, but Mr. J received a warranty benefit and did not pay extra.

Nexo owner N, who resides in Ulsan, pointed out Nexo’s rumbling problem with the stack system through a video. When you step on the accelerator pedal uphill, there is a phenomenon that the speed drops sharply at a certain point. In addition, Nexo owners in various regions such as Busan, Wonju, and Seoul are complaining of pain from the stack problem.

As the owners’ dissatisfaction over the Nexo stack problem accumulates, a Cheong Wa Dae petition that claims that the stack’s lifetime warranty should be provided has also been posted.

According to Naver Nexo Cafe’s own statistics, the time when the pain caused by the stack problem was raised from last May. In about 9 months from May last year to the 5th of this month, the number of owners who posted posts pointing out the stack problem in the cafe reached 1,68. Of these, only 24 people, only 2.25%, received free stack replacement.

Hyundai Motor Company responds to customer complaints about the stack through service centers and provides warranty repairs if necessary. However, it does not represent an official position on the stack lifetime warranty.

It is also pointed out among owners that Nexo’s stack warranty period may be disadvantageous for drivers who drive about 30,000 km per year. For owners who drive relatively long distances, the warranty period can expire within 5 years instead of 10 years.

Without Hyundai Motor’s special voluntary recall, the owner who has passed the warranty period has no choice but to pay the parts price of up to 40 million won when the stack is inspected. For this reason, it is argued that the 10 year or 160,000 km warranty period is harsh for long-distance drivers.

The management of Nexo Cafe is in a position to continuously inform the Blue House of such facts through petitions. As Hyundai Motor’s electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle high-voltage battery is a lifetime warranty, the owners’ common argument is that the stack should go with a lifetime warranty.
