The movement of Apple and LG Electronics to develop future electric vehicle technology is hot.

Major foreign media such as Reuters reported that Apple would directly create an autonomous vehicle based on electric powertrain, and LG Electronics announced in a press release on the 23rd that it would establish a joint venture headquarter in Incheon for the development of electric vehicle powertrains with Magna. .

Still skeptical,’Apple Car’… is it realized through collaboration with finished car makers?

News about the development of the Apple car continued steadily from 2014 to the present. However, as an emergency for the Apple car project began in 2016, there were also observations that Apple had limitations in making cars on its own.

However, since Reuters reported on the 22nd, public expectations for Apple cars have grown.

Reuters reported that Apple plans to produce electric self-driving cars with new battery technology in 2024. This means that the Titan Project can gradually become a reality.

Most importantly, who makes Apple’s electric self-driving cars? It seems that in-depth discussion on this part is still needed.

The public reaction to the Apple Car is still skeptical.

After the news of the development of an Apple car was delivered, the US automotive media’Car & Driver’ recently launched a survey on the subject of “Do you believe in the existence of an Apple car?”

As a result of the survey, 66% of the respondents said that they can only trust the vehicle by seeing it in person. 34% said they believed in the Apple Car but didn’t know why it hasn’t been released. It is an analysis that the public can trust only if there is a direct mention of Apple on vehicle development.

Apple has not yet disclosed a project to develop a car directly, but has been devoted to developing an infotainment system for a vehicle.

Apple recently succeeded in developing digital key technology with BMW.

Digital key refers to a technology that opens a vehicle door by itself simply by holding the smartphone on the vehicle door handle. This technology has been applicable only to Android phones in Korea, but with Apple’s cooperation with BMW, the iPhone itself can be transformed into a smartphone that can lock and open vehicle doors.

Apple is collaborating with BMW on developing the connected technology essential for electric vehicles.

At the Apple World Developers Conference, which took place online in June, BMW announced that it will put route-finding technology into electric vehicles in its pure electric i4, which will be released next year. To this end, it plans to actively utilize the mapping technology Apple has made.

If the i4’s Apple Mapping technology gets global attention, it is speculated that Apple could gain some strength in vehicle production in 2024. In addition, since Apple and BMW have maintained a good relationship with each other, it is highly likely that BMW will be involved in making Apple cars to some extent.

LG Electronics, one step ahead of Apple, announced the establishment of a joint venture with Magna

LG Electronics announced that it will establish a joint venture with Magna International, the world’s third-largest automotive electronic component company located in Canada, on the 23rd, after Apple car reports were released. In May 2013, the company officially announced the establishment of a joint venture, about 7 years after the establishment of V-ENS, an automotive parts engineering company.

LG Electronics’ such move is said to be ahead of Apple, which is running the Titan project. Although it did not have the foundation to make a car itself, it has already formed partnerships with numerous companies, so there is ample potential to become a leader in the field of electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles.

The electronic parts made by LG Electronics have been widely applied to already mass-produced electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Volt EV and Jaguar I-Pace. Most new car infotainment systems made by Hyundai-Kia Motors also included LG Electronics technology.

LG Electronics signed a memorandum of understanding with Volkswagen to develop a’crossover platform’ at the CES 2016 site in Las Vegas, USA in 2016. It has a foundation for connecting vehicles and home appliances to each other using a crossover platform in the future.

Connected car concept unveiled by LG Electronics at this year’s Korea Electronics Show
The connected car concept released by LG Electronics includes a wardrobe and a TV.

One of the achievements of LG Electronics is to unveil the concept of a connected car in partnership with Adient, a leading car seat maker. Inside this concept, a wardrobe, refrigerator, and TV are installed, and there is no separate steering wheel, reminiscent of a future autonomous vehicle.

Magna is known as Canada’s leading mobility technology company. Founded in 1957, the company manufactures various auto parts, including chassis, interior and exterior parts, in addition to powertrains. It supplies automakers and leads the global auto parts market.

LG Electronics and Magna will focus on developing the electric vehicle powertrain field through the establishment of a joint venture.

Electric vehicle powertrain consists of battery motors, etc. Since it is an essential element in the development of electric vehicles, electric vehicles made by this joint venture are more likely to be installed in future electric vehicles of global automakers such as GM and Volkswagen.

This contrasts with the reaction to the skeptical Apple car development.

Since the development of all-solid-state batteries in the first quarter of this year, Samsung Electronics has not been able to provide much news in the electric vehicle field. However, there are also observations that, as Samsung Electronics already owns Harman, the development of new electric vehicle technology at the Harman level could be achieved.
