Untimely queer festival controversy… after unification debate

Controversy continues over the remarks that a preliminary candidate Ahn Chul-soo of the National Assembly Party of Seoul has the right to reject the queer festival where LGBTQ people gather in a TV debate.

Candidate Ahn explained that it meant to move the queer festival out of the city center, but criticism continued over whether it was discrimination against minorities.

Preliminary candidate Ahn Cheol-soo and independent candidate Geum Tae-seop, who participated in the first TV debate for the unification of the Third Zone, collided at an unexpected point.

Candidate Geum asked Ahn’s willingness to attend, saying that it was meaningful to go to the Mayor of Seoul to the queer parade where LGBTQ people gather.

Representative Ahn emphasized that despite opposing discrimination, the right to refuse to watch queer festivals should be respected.

Right now, there was a strong backlash in the political world saying that it was a statement justifying hatred of LGBT people.

The Justice Party urged the mayor, who should guarantee equal rights for Seoul citizens, to apologize for promoting minority hatred and division.

Even the Progressive Party Mayor Song Myeong-sook pointed out that asking to hold an event in an invisible way is an expression of disgust, but is actually opposed.

Critics said that Ahn’s remarks about holding a queer festival away from the city center, taking San Francisco, USA as an example, are far from the truth.

This is because San Francisco Pride, a representative queer event, is held in the middle of the city under the auspices of famous companies such as Apple.

As the controversy continued, Candidate Ahn explained that it was not a matter of LGBT rights, but a matter of public morality and consideration for most heterosexuals.

As Candidate Ahn maintains the lead in the approval ratings of the Mayor of Seoul, this controversy is likely to reignite as it goes through the unification of opposition and the final election.
