[정치]U.S. officializes policy transition towards North Korea… urgently needed to resolve differences in opinion

The mention of a’new strategy’ by the White House is notable in that it formalized a policy shift toward North Korea.

Diplomatic communication is urgently needed to resolve the disagreement between the ROK and the United States in an early stage, as it foretells a completely different way of solving the North Korean nuclear program from the Trump administration.

Regarding the White House briefing, the government presented a principled stance that it would jointly discuss with the US to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

The officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were spared, saying they appreciated their intention to cooperate closely with allies such as Korea.

However, the atmosphere is paying attention to the fact that the Biden administration recognizes the North Korean nuclear program as a serious threat and is fully reviewing its strategy toward North Korea.

Earlier, the nominee of Secretary of State Tony Blingen also suggested a general review of North Korea’s denuclearization policy at a US Senate approval hearing.

A gradual approach is expected to focus on practical negotiations, along with a reevaluation of the achievements of the Trump administration’s US-North Korea talks in Singapore.

It is also worth noting that the White House has opened up both pressures and negotiation possibilities for North Korea, and that it will closely consult with regional allies such as Japan as well as Korea.

If we keep in mind the plan to reorganize the North Korean policy line in the big frame of public pressure, it could be a considerable burden on our government.

It is expected that the specific details of the Biden administration’s strategy toward North Korea will be prepared through working-level discussions with the United States after follow-up appointments, such as the Special Representative for North Korea Policy, are completed.

President Biden is likely to give a direction for foreign policy in a joint Senate and House speech next month.

There does not seem to be much time to narrow the disagreement between the ROK and the United States over the North Korean nuclear solution.
