In Myanmar, there is daily news that citizens are being sacrificed by the brutal repression of the military.
While the international community continues to condemn it, the Korean government has announced countermeasures.
The government first decided to ban the export of military materials to Myanmar and strictly examine the export of strategic industrial materials that can be used for military supplies.
Locally, there are claims that Korean tear gas is being used to suppress protests, but the government explained that there have been no cases of exporting tear gas to Myanmar since 2015.
The government also said it would stop new defense and security cooperation with Myanmar.
As a result, the establishment of the Korea-Myanmar Defense Council and the education and training of military officers and police officers in Myanmar, which were promoted by both countries, were eliminated.
As of last year, we decided to reconsider the development cooperation project worth 90 million dollars.
However, it is a policy to continue business that is directly related to public welfare or for humanitarian purposes.
This is the first time that the Korean government has imposed de facto sanctions for human rights or humanitarian conditions in a foreign country.
A high-ranking official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that Myanmar citizens are well aware of our country’s democratization experience and have anticipation, and the international community also shares the perception that special measures are needed now.
In addition, it was decided to allow Myanmarians in Korea to stay until the local situation stabilizes even after their period of stay is over.
The government made it clear that this was the first response, meaning that further action could be taken if the situation worsens.
