Former Sergeant Byun Hee-soo, who was forced to discharge after having undergone a sex change operation while serving in the military, died without fulfilling his dream of returning to military service again.

Sergeant Byeon’s death has been controversial as it raises issues about the military service and human rights of LGBTI people and transgender people in our society.

In January of last year, the military was forced to be discharged from the military after having undergone a sex change operation.

Former Sergeant Byun Hee-soo dressed in military uniform and stood at a press conference.

Sergeant Byeon, who was a tank crew specialty, appealed for an opportunity to continue his life’s dream of military service.

After that, a personnel appeal was filed with the Army Headquarters, but the dismissal was dismissed, saying it was legal.

Eventually, I filed a lawsuit against the court for cancellation of disposition, and I had my first pleading next month, but I recently passed away from my home.

In December of last year, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea recommended that the disposition be canceled, claiming that it violated the freedom of work.

The Ministry of Defense expressed condolences, but refused to talk about the issue of improving the system.

Earlier last year, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights revealed that Sergeant Byeon’s forced discharge may violate international human rights law.

Sergeant Byun’s death, who left without fulfilling his dream, leaves a homework in our society asking about the universal value of LGBTQ and transgender people’s military service and human rights, and it is noteworthy whether related discussions will continue.
