On the second day of their visit to Korea, US Secretary of State Tony Blincoln and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin concluded a ‘2+2’ meeting to prevent President Moon Jae-in.

These are the first ministerial figures President Moon Jae-in meets since the inauguration of the Biden U.S. administration.

President Moon is expected to highlight the progress in US-North Korea relations made by the Trump administration in the past, namely the need to inherit the Singapore Declaration.

The need to quickly establish a strategy toward North Korea has already reached consensus in the talks between the leaders last month.

The reaction from the US is drawing attention as North Korean Vice President Kim Yeo-jeong issued a message condemning the ROK-US joint exercise ahead of the US Secretary of State and Defense Ministers’ visit to Korea.

The two secretaries of state and defense are expected to convey the willingness to strengthen the alliance by emphasizing that since President Biden took office.

In particular, there is a high possibility that pressure on improving Korea-Japan relations, citing the necessity of strengthening the ROK-US alliance as well as the ROK-US-Japan alliance.

Furthermore, it cannot be ruled out the possibility of appealing for participation in the’quad’, a security conference that the United States is making efforts to keep China in check.

It is the main concern of this meeting, whether there is progress in the face-to-face summit meeting that has gathered the will in the US-ROK summit talks.

With rumors of the US-Japan summit coming out next month, there is a possibility that Blincoln will deliver President Biden’s message on the ROK-US summit.

Before and after the interview with President Moon, National Security Officer Seo Hoon is also scheduled to have individual interviews with US Secretary of State Austin Blincoln.

As President Moon’s first meeting with a person from the Biden administration, the messages coming and going from this meeting are expected to be a measure of the direction of discussions on peace on the Korean Peninsula as well as relations with the US.
