In North Korea next month, Gwangmyeong Seongjeol, the birthday of the National Defense Commissioner Kim Jong-il, is one of the biggest holidays in North Korea.

Since 2018, when inter-Korean dialogue was active, the provocation that was repeated around this anniversary has subsided.

We are attracting attention to what this year will be when inter-Korean relations are in a turning point.

On February 7, 2016, one day ahead of North Korea’s Military Day

North Korea launched Gwangmyeongseong 4, which claims to be a space launch vehicle.

In February of the following year, four days before Gwangmyeong Seongjeol, the birthday of Chairman Kim Jong-il, launched a test launch of the North Korean mid-to-ground missile type 2.

However, as the inter-Korean dialogue broke out in 2018, such provocations subsided.

Last year, a commemorative event was omitted due to Corona 19, but in early March, a sudden armed demonstration was held with a super-sized gun.

February of this year, when two anniversaries are celebrated, draws more attention.

Although Corona 19 has not been resolved, conditions seem to have improved compared to last year, with large-scale party conventions, late-night celebrations, and feverish ceremonies.

In addition, Chairman Kim Jong-un has pledged to strengthen nuclear armed forces.

Unlike last year, when the ROK-US combined training was canceled in March, Defense Minister Seo-wook expressed his intention to conduct a combined training this year.

It has also stated that if North Korea responds to the military talks, it will be able to discuss the training issue, but North Korea, which has requested to stop training, has yet to comment.

In the midst of this, interest in the turning point of inter-Korean relations is growing as February enters the external environment that has changed with the inauguration of the US Biden government.
