A government official said that the Cheonghae unit, which had been dispatched to respond to the capture of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Korean national carrier, the Korea Chemi, arrived in the waters near the Strait of Hormuz at around 4 a.m. our time and began to perform their mission.

Cheonghae Corps 33rd Jin Choi Young-ham was dispatched to the Strait of Hormuz yesterday after receiving the situation that the Korean national ship’Kemi, Korea’ was captured by Iran while carrying out an operation in the waters south of Muscat Port in Oman.

Choi plans to respond to the situation in close cooperation with the Combined Naval Command in Bahrain, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

A total of 20 people were on board, including 11 Myanmarians, 2 Indonesians, and 2 Vietnamese, including 5 Korean sailors including the captain, 1st, 2nd and 3rd class navigators and engine managers.

Is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also checking the safety of the crew and requesting the early removal of the vessel?

[기자]

Yes, it is.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is requesting Iran to lift the detention of Korean vessels captured by Iranian authorities.

They also explained that they have checked the safety of the crew along with the local ship detention situation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “We are working with the Iranian embassy to understand the situation of ship detention and request the early removal of the detention.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday afternoon (4th) that a Korean vessel sailing in the waters near Oman in the Strait of Hormuz was confirmed to be moving to Iranian waters at the request of Iranian authorities for an investigation.

Earlier, local Iranian media reported that Iranian authorities captured a Korean oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on the 4th local time on charges of environmental pollution.

DM Shipping, a shipbuilder of Korean chemistry, refuted the reason for the seizure suggested by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, saying that it did not cause environmental pollution.

The captain of the Korean Chemie is a veteran with 15 years of experience, and since he completed a close inspection three months ago, there is little chance of oil leaking.

It is speculated that Iran’s move is a result of complaints about the suspension of trade and financial transactions with Iran in order to implement US sanctions against Iran.

Currently, trade between Korea and Iran is virtually suspended, and Korean won accounts opened in the name of the Iranian Central Bank at banks in Korea are also frozen.

The Strait of Hormuz, the entrance to the Gulf waters, is a strategic point where about a third of the world’s maritime crude oil transports pass.

Iran threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz whenever military tensions increased with the United States, and there are precedents of arresting vessels such as oil tankers several times.
