[정치][앵커리포트] Three Plans for Promoting Nuclear Power Plant Construction in North Korea, Is It Transfer or Political Offensive?

Let’s look at the contents of the document’Promotion Plan for Nuclear Power Plant Construction in North Korea’ released by the Ministry of Industry.

The Ministry of Industry reviewed three proposals.

It is the Geumho District and Demilitarized Zone in Sinpo City, South Hamgyeong Province, and the Uljin area in Gyeongbuk, Korea.

In the Kumho District, there is a light water reactor that was built according to the Geneva negotiations in 1994, but was stopped due to new suspicions regarding the North Korean nuclear program.

In May 2018, similar to when the actual Ministry of Industry document was written, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun reported that, citing sources from North Korea relations, the North Korean authorities asked the relevant ministries to inspect the light water reactor and report in detail the possibility of resuming construction and the necessary supplies. .

However, the government also stated that it is difficult to control the spent nuclear fuel if it is built in North Korea.

The second one. The construction in the DMZ has the advantage of securing the symbolism of peaceful use of nuclear power in a peaceful area, supporting the export of nuclear power plants and controlling spent nuclear fuel, but he wrote that it takes a lot of time and cost to build a new reactor.

Lastly, this is the review plan for Uljin, Gyeongbuk.

As the current government has emphasized post-nuclear power generation and renewable energy, it is said that a national consensus on revising the energy conversion policy should be preceded, and concerns about the backlash from storing spent nuclear fuel in South Korea.

The document also states the nohyeong, so-called model name, of the nuclear power plant to be promoted.

APR1400 is a Korean nuclear power plant developed by us over the past 10 years. It was first applied to Shin-Kori Units 3 and 4 in Korea, and was also applied to the Baraka nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates, which succeeded in exporting for the first time in Korea.

The introduction of the APR1400+ was considered only in the case of the DMZ.It is a more advanced model than the APR1400.It is a 100% native nuclear power plant that has been developed with domestic technology including core technologies for nuclear power plant operation such as reactor coolant pumps and nuclear power plant measurement and control facilities, but has not been actually built yet. .
