During the May 18 Democratization Movement, a member of the Airborne Corps, who participated in the martial law army, sought forgiveness from the family of the victims who were shot and killed.

It is the first time that the martial law forces admitted to firing themselves and apologized directly to the victims.

Mr. A, a member of the Airborne Corps, who was a martial law force for the May 18 Democratization Movement, burst into the cry he had endured while kneeling in front of his bereaved family.

On May 23, 1980, Mr. A shot a gun at a civilian near a reservoir in Nodae-dong, Gwangju City.

At this time, the victim was the late Park Byeong-hyun, who was 25 at the time, and was transformed while heading to Boseong, Jeollanam-do, to help with farming.

After 40 years, Mr. A stood in front of the deceased’s family to admit and apologize for his wrongdoing.

The bereaved family warmly hugged and forgave Mr. A.

Mr. A also knelt down in search of the gravestone of the victims at the National 5 18 National Cemetery.

Among the martial law forces employed during the May 18 Democratization Movement, Mr. A was the first to admit that he had fired and apologized directly to his bereaved family.

The 5·18 Investigation Committee expects that Mr. A’s courageous actions, who apologized for what he did 40 years ago, will move the hearts of other martial law soldiers.
