At the time of the April 3rd, Jeju Island, a retrial was held for 330 people who were missing while living in prisons after illegal military trials.

The judges pleaded innocence and comforted the bereaved, saying that this should never happen again.

A retrial trial was held in more than 70 years, in which 333 people in Jeju 4·3 prisoners and their families were waiting for their honor to be restored.

The prosecution pleads the accused not guilty, and the court sentenced him not guilty.

During the first trial, a surviving representative stood up and said thanks on behalf of the 333 souls.

[박영수 / 박세원 피고인 아들 : 영혼들을 대신해서 절을 하고 싶은데 법정에서 절하는 것은 변호사님이 금지라고 해서 목례로써 영혼을 대신해 목례를 올립니다.]

The bereaved families in the auditorium shed tears of joy as if the stone-like clumps on their hearts for many years had disappeared.

Most of the missing persons sentenced to innocence this time were on the list of prisoners in the military trial at the time of the April 3rd or were executed and were unable to find the body.

The daughter, who is now eighth-soon, keeps reminding her of her mother who died waiting for her father, who died without being found not guilty.

[이임자 / 재심 청구인 : 좀 더 일찍 했으면 어머니가 무죄라도 된 것을 보고 돌아가셨으면 좋았을 텐데 너무 늦었습니다.]

The son, who did not know the day his father died, is thrilled that the day he was convicted is the day of his father’s sacrifice.

[이석종 / 재심 청구인 : (아버지가) 돌아가신 날을 모르니까 오늘 아버지 제사입니다. 한을 풀어서 저녁에 가서 제사를 지내면 더욱 뜻이 깊은 날이 아닐까 생각합니다.]

This retrial trial was completed late in the afternoon, with 20 retrial cases being held for about 20 minutes per case.

Two ordinary prisoners were also tried, and both were found not guilty.

Until now, including this review, the 4·3 review has been requested by the defendant himself or his family, and there have been many difficulties.

With the passage of the revised bill of the Jeju 4/3 Special Act, the retrial process is expected to proceed with the request for retrial by the prosecutors’ office.
