As the number of areas where wild boars with African swine fever and ASF are found are gradually increasing, pig farmers nationwide are getting tighter.

Rapid identification of infected areas is the basis for quarantine, but the rate of detection of captured wild boars is extremely low, raising questions about the reliability.

Since the 4th, 6 wild boars with ASF have been discovered one after another in Yangyang, Gangwon-do.

Earlier, 8 infected wild boars were found in Yeongwol, the southernmost part of Gangwon-do.

It is a place that is completely out of the existing occurrence area, which is layered over 1,800 km, five times closer to Seoul and Busan.

In areas where wild boars infected with ASF are discovered, fences to block wild boars are being installed in various places.

If the infected area continues to expand along the Baekdudaegan, it will threaten the Chungcheong area, the largest pig farm in Korea.

However, it is questionable whether the infected area was properly identified.

This is because in areas where ASF has not occurred, the Ministry of Environment has set a rate of only 5% to inspect captured wild boars.

As a result, there are cases where there are fewer wild boars captured in the past 1 year and 4 months, and the number of tests is not even 10.

The Ministry of Environment has a position that there is a limit to capturing wild boars due to a lack of manpower, and it is difficult to perform full inspection.

[환경부 관계자 : 가용인력으로 최대한 효과적인 방향으로 하다 보니까 발생지역 내에서는 포획 개체와 폐사체 다 검사하는 거고 비발생지역에서는 폐사체는 100%, 나머지 포획 개체는 5%로….]

Experts are convinced that rapid identification of infected areas is fundamental to quarantine, so the number of samples of captured wild boar samples should be significantly increased.
