The controversy over the promotion of Jeju’s 2nd Airport has continued for more than five years, and even a recent public opinion poll has been conducted.

Recently, the controversy reignited when Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong delivered his opinion to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport.

Reporter Ko Jae-hyung’s report.

Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong announced his intention to promote Jeju’s second airport.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport added criticism to the government as it responded to a request to disclose Jeju Island’s position.

[원희룡/제주도지사 : 먼바다와 태풍을 맞받아치는 가덕도에 바다를 메워서 공항을 짓겠다는 그 정부가 제주도의 동서 균형 발전을 위해서 제주도의 환경 인프라를 위해서 왜 몇조 투자를 못합니까.]

I heard that Jeju Island had high approval in the Seongsan area, which included the planned site of the 2nd airport, as a result of a poll conducted last month.

However, in the same survey, the opinions of the entire metropolitan citizens arose as opposition prevailed.

Those who favored the announcement on Jeju Island expressed their welcome, and the other side strongly opposed it.

Opponents insist that they play with words with public opinion from villages that benefit more than villages that suffer damage from the new airport initiative.

Even residents of Seongsan-eup, who were highly favored, disagree greatly with Governor Won’s remarks.

[제2 공항 추진 반대 주민 : 결과가 반대로 나와서 의견 수렴이 되겠구나 철회가 되겠구나 기대를 갖고 있었는데 실망감이 크고 도민을 기만했다고 생각하고 있습니다.]

[제2 공항 추진 찬성 주민 : 공항이 들어오면 그로 인해 발전되면 여러 가지 부수적인 시설들이 들어오면 지역 발전에 좋지 않을까 생각합니다.]

The problem is that as the pros and cons become clear, conflicts and confrontations intensify as neighbors are neighbors, villages are villages.

If the meaning is different, the goal is getting deeper, such as not saying hello and not looking for a regular restaurant.

Confrontation and conflict have continued since the site was selected for the Jeju New Airport in 2015.

As the related controversy prolongs, the damage is going back to both the pros and cons.
